Approved For Release 2007/07/18: CIA-RDP80-0081 OA005300230005-6 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY INFORMATION REPORT This material contains information affecting the Na- tional Defense of the United States within the mean- ing of the espionage Lws, Title 18. U.S.C. Secs. 793 and 794, the transmission or revelation of which in any manner to an unauthorized person is prohibited by law. 25X1 SECRET'- U.S. OFFICIALS ONLY COUNTRY USSR (Estonian SSR) REPORT SUBJECT 1. Airfield at Tartu DATE DISTR. 10 November 1954 2. Railroads in the Estonian SSR NO. OF PAGES 3 REQUIREMENT NO. RD REFERENCES THE SOURCE EVALUATIONS IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINITIVE. THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) The Airfield at Tartu 1. Up tc early fall 1953, the Soviets had lot built any railroad to the Tartu airfield. About two years befbt it was rumored that the Soviets intended to build a railroad from the Kirkna station (Ka,rkna is about 12 kilometers north of Tartu) to the airfield. They have not, however, started any preparations. 2. All transport that goes to the airfield from the Tartu railroad-station is now made by trucks. Informant has many times seen aerial bombs being trans- ported to the airfield by truck. The bombs that have been observed'in such transport were about 1.5 meters long, and the ends of the crates in which they were carried were about 25 centimeters by 25 centimeters. Informant does not know how many trucks are used in such transport or how often or how regularly such transport takes place. 3. According to identification from pictures of aircraft, the aircraft on the Tartu field are TU-2 light bombers. Estimated Quantity of Rolling Stock in the Estoniai SSR 4. It is impossible to estimate how many passenger and freight cars there are on the railroads in Estonia, because the cars circulate over the whole Soviet Union. Thus, railroad cars in Estonia are from another part of the Soviet Union, while Estonian railroad cars are outside Estonia. On the other hand, locomotives of Soviet Estonia do not, as a rule, go outside Estonia. It can be assumed that on the Tallinn-Leningrad railroad line the locomotives are changed in Kingisepp (Jamburg) immediately after the Estonian border. On the Tallinn-Riga line the locomotives are changed in Valga. On the Tartu- Petseri-Pskov line and also on the Voru-Petseri-Pskov line the locomotives are changed at Pskov. The number of locomotives in the Estonian SSR can be approximately deter- mined by the following calculations: Locomotives in Tartu in the old depot 6 (known) in the new depot 4 (known) on branch lines 5 (estimated) Total in Tartu 15 Locomotives in Tapa 15 (same number as in Tartu) Locomotives in Tallinn about 25 (calculating Tallinn's de- pots and its importance as a terminal) Locomotives in Valga about 25 (same number as at Tallinn) Total of locomotives in the Estonian SSR about 80 Principal Railroad Stations in Estonia 6. The principal railroad stations in Estonia are the following: Location Facilities Tallinn Tapa Tartu Valga Moisakula Depots, shops, fuel storage, coaling facilities, sidings for locomotives, and water tanks. Depots, fuel storage, coaling facilities, sidings for lo- comotives, and water tanks. Depots, fuel storage, coaling facilities, sidings for lo- comotives, and water tanks. Depots, repair shops, fuel storage, coaling facilities, sidings for locomotives, and water tanks. For narrow-gauge line: depots, railroad shops, fuel stor- age, coaling facilities, sidings for locomotives, and water tanks. Stations with Water Tanks Only 7. The following stations between Tallinn and Tartu have water tanks only: Aegviidu, which was being built and should be finished; Jogeva; and Tabi- vere. 8. Between Tartu and Petseri, the station at Polva has only a water tank. 9. The towns of Petseri and Voru have stations where the only facilities are water tanks. There are water tanks on narrow-gauge lines: a. Between Parnu and Moisakula: at Surju Station. b. Between Parnu and Tallinn: at Rapla Station. 1. The total number of locomotives estimated by informant apparently does not include locomotives on the narrow-gauge lines. 2. It should be noted that all rail traffic in the Estonian SSR is now moved by steam locomotives, which are fired with shale oil.
