REPORT SUBJECT Soviet Naval Vessels Sighted in the DATE DISTR. 9 December 19 Baltic This is UNEVALUATED NO. OF, PAGES REQUIREMENT NO. RD THE SOURCE EVALUATIONS IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINITIVE. THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) Early on 31 July 1954, six large Soviet destroyers were sighted northwest of Pakri (N 59-20, E 24-00), 15 to 16 nautical miles from the coast, pro- ceeding in line formation on an east-southeasterly course at a speed of about 15 knots. The distance between individual destroyers was,200 to 300 meters. The first three destroyers of the group, which were apparently new, looked like Type-15 destroyers. The leader bore the number 21. The three rear destroyers of the group were of a type similar to the first three, but had longer narrower stacks and a larger destroyer is- land, and only the forward mast was a tripod.
