SUBJECT Observations in the Barents
Sea Area
THE SOURCE EVALUATIONS IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINITIVE.

directly to Cape Karin Nos (N 68-3 , E 3-1 ,about 30 nautical miles away.
From there, the ship sailed through the ice to the open water 10 or 15
nautical miles southwest of Cape Karin Nos.? At that position the vessel
was hailed by a Soviet trawler The trawler was about 120 to 150 feet
long and was reinforced for ice navigation; it was the .same type .as the
vessels which sail in large numbers northward
The trawler was not armed, but it appeared to operate as a patrol boat.
The captain of the Soviet vessel claimed that ship was inside
the territorial limits, and that all the courses followed by
ship during the preceding two or three days had been plotted. These courses
were 15 to 30 nautical miles off shore. There was poor visibility durin~z this
per~nd neither the trawler nor any other ships were seen
The trawler had no visible radar equipment on board
the course of the ship had been plotted by land-based radar
equipment. After some discussion the Soviets permitted ship to
