THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) 1. On the morning of 15 July 1954 ship passed four miles off shore at Cape Svyatoy Nos (N 68-10, 39-4 en route to Mezen. At that point eight naval vessels were seen engaged in an exercise. Three of these units were submarines. They were submerged to the extent that detailed observa- tion was not possible. One lay far out to sea, one close to the shore, and a third far forward 2. One of the naval vessels was a training or supply ship marked No. V-101.1 It was approximately 200 feet long. It had a vertical st -1-. a large dee1-- house with square frames running from the bridge to the rear, a blunt stern, and a 25X1 small gun of about two-inch caliber behind e. shiela on -cne foredeck. this vessel approached from the land and passed directly in front of ship exchanged visual greetings with this vessel. 3. The fifth vessel observed was destroyer which was about 250 feet long and had a low forecastle. It had two s acks, one of which was a slant- ing stack close to the bridge and a smaller vertical one to the rear. The ship,which lay low in the water proceeded at slow speed in a westerly direc- tion. 4. The three remaining vessels were small patrol boats or MTBs; they were observed from a great distance. Each vessel had a straight bow, a small forecastle, and one stack. These vessels appeared to be moving very slowly close to shore. 5. ship proceeded directly to the first pontoon quay at Mezen and the loading began at once. The water depth at low tide was between 12g and 13 feet. loaded to a depth of 14 feet, 1 inch, and it was aground twice, eacn idle a low tide. The pilot said that another ship had loaded to a depth of 15 feet, six inches and that it required two high tides to leave the area. 7. On the outgoing trip vessel had passed a small patrol boat at Cape Bolshoy Gorodetskiy (N 67-43, E 40-57) and another at Cape Terskiy Orlov (N 67-13, E 41-18). Both were small gray wooden vessels with the 25X1 appearance of large fishing boats. They flew no pennants and No. 32 (para. 3) but it appeared to be of more modern construction. 25X1 the return trip ship passed three vessels.,which he believed were fishery protection vesselsjnear Kharlov Island (N 68-49, E 37-21). 8. On the aft rnoon of uly,approximately four miles west of Cape Svyatoy a destroyer -vw.th pennant No. 158 which was proceeding on an easterly course at about 15 or 16 knots.
