1. By 28 September 1954,
The troops were clean, looked well fed, did not appear tired, and their morale
was apparently high. They wore light summer khaki uniforms, and in addition
to their packs, many carried bundles2 No winter uniforms or uniforms of a rank
higher than captain were observed. Each soldier carried three hand grenades of
the potato-masher type, each rifleman had 50 rounds of ammunition, and with each
submachine gun and crew-served light machine gun there were 1,500 rounds. The
weapons were clean and well oiled. Except for 20 tanks, no heavy weapons were
observed being transported from Sinuiju.
2. An average of ten trains left Sinuiju daily. A train leaving Sinuiju for Antung at
8 a.m. returned the same evening, and left again at 8 a.m. the following day. The
trains were loaded about 70 kilometers south of Sinuiju. Trainloads of cement and
of construction steel, primarily bridge girders, were observed moving into Sinuiju
from Antung each day during the period 20 to 28 September. On the steel, the
phrase, "Made in Halle," was printed in German. Three trains were seen entering
Sinuiju, each loaded with 20 to 24 new green 3-1/2 to 5 ton trucks. Large wooden
cases measuring 3 by 1-1/2 by 1-1/2 meters with Russian writing on them were also
observed.
3. On 22 September Chinese Communist troops also started using Manp'ojin as a port of
exit. Between 22 and 26 September 13,000 troops left North Korea through that
port. They carried 7.62 mm rifles. About 4,600 submachine guns and seventy 60 mm
mortars were observed being transported out of Korea.
4. Some time between 16 and 28 September two night air-raid drills were held in
Sinuiju. One jet plane was used in connection with the drills. Eight anti-
aircraft searchlights were observed, six near the bridgehead, one near the
railroad station, and one to the rear of a large hospital..
