10 The Turda airfield, built in 1952-1953, lies 1,300 meters south of the Turda
railroad station in an angle formed by the Turda-Cluj and Turda-Abrud
railroad lines. The airfield is 2,400 meters long and 1,200 meters wide.
There are two concrete runways 50 meters wide made of 10 by 10 concrete
slabs whose joints are tarred. There is a distance of 300 meters between
the two runways which run north and south. The eastern runway was ripped
up in the middle of 1953 and lengthy repairs were made.
2. Construction of buildings on the airfield was started in 1953 and is still
underway. There are three hangars on the west side of the field. These
hangars, 75 by 35 meters, are of concrete, steel frame, with corrugated
sheet metal roofs and with sheet steel sliding doors facing the airfield.
Construction of a fourth hangar was started in the spring of 1954.
Adjoining buildings of 2-stories containing offices and storage space, are
built onto the west side of the hangars. Two 3-story barracks buildings
and a row of garages, 150 meters long, are. located on the north side of the
field. The 3-story buildings are 80 by 20 meters, have a flat roof, and
two staircases. Foundations have been completed for two additional
barracks buildings to be erected on this site. The headquarters building,
35 by 15 meters, is located on the north side of the field. This building
also contains quarters for the airfield guards.
3. On the west side of the field there are parking spaces for 60 fighter
planes and 15 transport planes which are protected by earth mounds and
planted with shrubbery.
4. The central fuel storage dump is located north of the barracks complex.
This consists of six underground reservoirs which are covered by a mixture
of sand and gravel four meters high. There are two small pumps and a
small building where the noncommissioned officer in charge of the fuel

dump and the guards live. The area is surrounded by barbed wire. There are
two gasoline tanks with automatic pumps between each of the hangars. Each
tank can hold fuel from a 3-ton tank car at one filling. There is a small
ammunition magazine between the two completed barracks buildings. There are
five antiaircraft gun positions surrounding the Turda airfield.
5.
The radio transmitter is located on a tower on the headquarters building.
The single rod aerial, without insulators, resembles an upside down umbrella
frame; single wires go from this aerial to the roof. There is no permanent
radar station but there is a radar platoon in the air service battalion.
The unit has three vehicles, one car on which the radar screen is mounted.
The unit is continually changing position on the airfield, moving mostly
along the east side. The weather station is a concrete block house located
between the east side of the field and the railroad line to Cluj. There are
no permanent searchlight positions. There are two searchlights mounted on
3-axied Zis trucks belonging to the air service battalion. The north and
south sides of the airfield are lighted with red and yellow neon lights.
6. An overhead power line from the Turda power plant leads along the west side
of the Turda-Vantul de Sus road. At the northwest corner of the airfield
an underground cable branches off to the field.
7.
