The Zahony (Hungary) - Chop - 2ukachevo - Verecky Pass - Nikolayev Roadl
1. Between the end of World War II and July 1954, this road was rebuilt, using
the labor of PWs and political prisoners, of whom 55 percent were Hunga-
rians.
2. The section of the road from Chop to Mukachevo has been widened to 12 me-
ters. It has a good concrete surface on a foundation 50 cm thick. All
nine bridges in this section have been rebuilt of reinforced concrete..
There is an underpass beneath the railroad at a point about five kilo-
meters east of Chop and another underpass 17 kilometers west of Mukachevo.
The bypass at Mukachevo, completed in 1952, joins the Mukachevo-Uzhgorod
main road at a point north of Mukachevo.
3. The section of the road from Mukachevo to Polyana is about 30 kilometers
long; it has been completely rebuilt. About 17 kilometers northeast of
Mukachevo, this road used to divide into two roads: one ran along the
right bank of the Latoritsa River, and the other crossed the river and led
to Verecky, passing through the village of Svalyava. This river crossing
has been eliminated, and the main road to the Carpathian pass now runs on
the right bank of the Latoritsa River and joins the Svalyava road about
seven kilometers south of Polyana. The width of the road is 10 to 12 me-
ters, except at points north and south of Polyana, where the width is eight
meters.
4. The section from Polyana to Felsoverecke is about 32 kilometers long.2 Ten
kilometers north of Polyana, a previously existing sharp bend has been eli-
minated. The serpentine near Felsohabrenitsa has also been eliminated.3
The width of the road has been increased to eight meters.
5. The section from Felsoverecke to Verecky Pass is about ten kilometers long.
Most of this section has a concrete surface; the rest has been surfaced with
gravel.4
