1. The figure on page 2 shows the method employed in road building in the
Sverdlovsk area of Siberia. The road from Ivdel (N 60-42, E 60-28) to
Vizhay (U 61-16, E 60-10) is constructed in this way. The legend is as
follows:

a. Snow.
b. Wooden log (progon) with a diameter of 30-50 cm and a length of ninE; meters.
c. Plank (plastina) 6-8 cm thick,- 5.5-in long, and 40 cm wide.
d. Wooden beam (otboynyy brus) 16-24 cm in diameter, apparently used to form
guard rails to prevent vehicles from slipping off the road.
e. Sleeper (shpala) 25 cm in diameter.

informant added the following explanations:
The logs (b) are fastened to each other by means of a wooden nail 20 cm long,
as shown at (h) in Sketch 3, through a hole made with an electric drill.
Sleepers (e) are attached to t1e logs (b) every 70 cm, as shown in Sketch 2.
The planking (c) is fastened to the sleepers (e) by wooden nails.
Guard rails (d) are affixed to the planking (c) as indicated in Sketch 4.
In Sketch 4, (S) indicates the soft iron clamps (skoby) holding sleeper to
log and guard rail to planking.
