Military Activity in Bernau, Beeskcor and Strausberg 25X1 EVALUATION DATE OF CONTENT. DATE OBTAINED FERENC ES _ PAGES 2 REMARKS PLACE OBTAINED, ENCLOSURES (NO. & TYPE) DATE PREPARED 17 November 1954 This is UNEVALUATED Information) 1. At 0630 on 3 November 1954, 20 x 152-mm field howitzers on 10 25X1 flatcars with sideracks were seen at the Bernau fraight station. The barrels of the howitzers which were covered projected about 2 meters beyond the protective shield, apparently had muzzle brakes and a caliber of about 15 cm. The howitzers were single-tired. A handwheel was on the right side behind the protective shield which was backward bent and had slanting lower corners, The rearward gun-trail crosspieces mounted rods which pointed diagonally upward. 3. On 5 November, the Reiter Kaserne (4041) in Beesko4 was fully lighted. Fourteen trucks were seen in the norht section of the installation. An undetermined number of artillery pieces appeared to be stored in a vehicle shed. 5 soldiers each left toward the town. 1 2. At about 1400, approximately 20 soldiers unloaded the shipment. Eight guns had apparently left. Three trucks towing 3 guns and occupied by 4. A destroyed apartment house was reconstructed and was occupied by officer families. The new buildings at the intersection of Karl Liebknechtsstrasse and Schuetzenstrasse were completed. 5. Three new transmitters, 50 to 60 meters high, were constructed in the Lindenberg-Glienicke area northwest of Beeskoo. 2 In late October, 20 to 30 Soviet officers were observed in the barracks the officers presumably participated in a course on chemical warfare. 3 Ommomment. If the howitzers actually had muzzle brakes, they were 52- model M-1943 field howitzers. The way of loading and transfer to 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 the installtion tends to indicate that an arrival of equipment was observed. No information has so far been received on a reequipping of artillery units of the 7th Gds Mecz Div and the 7th Light Arty Brig. 25x1 Approved For Release 2008/04/09: CIA-RDP80-0081 OA005500950011-8 Approved For Release 2008/04/09: CIA-RDP80-0081 OA005500950011-8 2. Comment. The return from the summer camp of the 468th Gds or' egt of the 7th Gds Mecz Div on 25 and 26 September was previously reported The observation of artillery pieces in the Reiter aser-n , w is is a ieved to be occupied only by the mortar regiment, supports a previous assumption, according to which the medium mortar units of the mortar regiments were possibly reequipped with artillery pieces. The motor vehicle are believed to belong to the 7th Gds Mecz Div and al' ut one to the 468th Gds Mort Regt of this division. 3 ~ Comment. Since several officer courses of GSFG were previously held in the barracks installation on Straussee, the information may be correct, Approved For Release 2008/04/09: CIA-RDP80-0081 OA005500950011-8
