THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) indentification cards were not necessary in Hopei Province. 25X1 In Peiping no restrictions were imposed upon residents who traveled within the city, and the residents were seldom searched by the authorities. A resident-who desired to remain out of the city overnight, however, was required to obtain prior approval from his local police station and upon his return had to report again to the police station. A Peiping resident who wished to travel outside the city was required to have his employer apply for his pass; or, if a household member were the traveler, the head of the household could apply for the pass. No guarantor was required, and no investigation of the applicant was made. The pass was usually issued within two days after the application was presented to the police station. No pass was.needed between Tanghsien (N 39-55, E 116-39) and Peiping because of the large amount of travel between the two towns. 2. A resident of Peiping who desired to travel to other places abroad, 25X1' applied for a permit in the same manner, but underwent extensive investigation before receiving the permit.' 3.
