indentification cards were not necessary in Hopei Province. 25X1
In Peiping no restrictions were imposed upon residents who traveled within the
city, and the residents were seldom searched by the authorities. A resident-who
desired to remain out of the city overnight, however, was required to obtain
prior approval from his local police station and upon his return had to report again
to the police station. A Peiping resident who wished to travel outside the city
was required to have his employer apply for his pass; or, if a household member
were the traveler, the head of the household could apply for the pass. No guarantor
was required, and no investigation of the applicant was made. The pass was usually
issued within two days after the application was presented to the police station.
No pass was.needed between Tanghsien (N 39-55, E 116-39) and Peiping because of the
large amount of travel between the two towns.
2. A resident of Peiping who desired to travel
to other places abroad, 25X1'
applied for a permit in the same manner, but underwent extensive investigation
before receiving the permit.'
