24 September. Between 0930 and x.500, there was no air actlov i. t y.
Jet engines were ;awed up in front of the hangars and in the
southwes,6err corner of the field. About, 47 f-28s or Ti-I1-28:, seen
at. the field were parked as follows: 7,
24 0ctibe_.: About 0800, 6 IL-28s took off within five minutes.
The airc-raf`o- flew in elements of two at a d.?.stance of 1 1/2 wing
spans between the two planes. The distance between the individual
forma* ,ions was 500 meters and, occasionally, decreased to 1.00 meters.
The zxe^o:Mses were repeated several 1' mes . The a:ircr?r.1 '; landed
individually in such a way that one a:Zrcraft touched ground while the
other was still t?.xiing. After, the air activn.ty,, the aircraft were
parked 'n front of the hangar and in the southwestern cornear of

to a formation with 3 aircraft each flyinj right and left of the
leading I1-28 at distances of not more than one wing span.

were seen In an emplaccement 130 meters southeast of the Rudoifshoehe
Settlement. Possibilities of observation were limited.
On 2 Oct r;'oer, 6 x 76-mm AA guns were seen J n the emplacement in
the northtiwaestern par of the field. ii. ht motor vehicles were
parked in the shed at the b., vun emplacemment. Three 37-mm ~,li guns
were seen in the emplacement near the Itudelfshoehe Settlement. It
rives f.elieved that not all.uns could be seen there. 2

take. off point at the eastern end of the runway at a distance of
about 1.50 meters from east to west. The antenna mast which was
about 20 meters high was braced once and had a funnel 'shaped
device on. top. Two other radio trucks with rod antennas were
standing to the west;. A PKV-45 (D/F) station, a radio truck with
bxrcozn shaped antenna and another radio truck
were seen in the oa-tern extension of the runway south of
Ui,x`schfclde. A radio installation of one m- st was seen next to
the latter rad:W truck, One Kn..ferest-tjpe and one Fishnet-type
rdder? set ;.sere seen in the western part of the field north of

6. On 4 October, there was no air activity. There was a closed ceiling
at a loci a?. ti.-t : de. ;rain and fair v:isi.bility. Il-28s parked at he
field included an undeterinined number at the northern edge and 8
southr;cst of `-he : anwa,
S. On 4_ October. the L.A. barracks located :c.n the angle formed by the
'7;egendorfW:''ern.euchen and '. esendahl-'J;erneuchen roads southwest of
the :field appeared o be fully occupied. A sentry wearing red-
borde7-ed black epaulets wa posted at the gate at the Werneuchen-
1 0 . JecCendah:i road. The apartment; houses adjacent to the northiw+es'(;.
were occupied by Soviet dependents. The barracks in he southern
pars; of the field could not be seen. The V'erneuchen-;;'esendahl road
was blocked. ;.:any officers and Ell wearing; black-bordered blue. epaulets
were seen going toward and coiaming from the direction of the town. 1
9. On_ 2[ Oc?+?ae , the Ali gun e.apl.acement in the northwestern corner
of the field was occupied by 6 Ati guns zf medium caliber. 2
:e10. In eaci October.. parachuting from a Li-2 which apps=sachet from
the d rec;,on of 'erneuchen was pracy4.Ced over the former Strausberg
airfield. Similar praetice had been observed previously. Several
soldiers wearing leather jackets and dark-blue shirrs jumped. Their
parachtatt;es opened at various altitudes. The parachutes used were
square and rounded off at the corners. Besides the soldiiers an
equal cumber of parachutes, about 50 cm in diameter, fitted with
red cl.o f~.he, 43 x 250 cm, were dropped from the a-4.rcraf t. ilfter
landing ?shese parachutes were picked up by the soldiers. All
parachutists carried a parachute container on their backs and.
another a smaller one, on their breasts. After a local flight,
the Li-2 returned in the direc~4i.on of ',i'erneuchen while the soldiers

1. The following air activity and aircraft were observed at 71erneuchen
airfield on 24 September and 24 October 1954:

The aircraft flew in elements of two at a distance of 1 1/2 wing
spans between the two planes. The distance between the individual
formations was 500 meters and, occasionally, decreased to 100 meters.
The exercises were repeatediseveral times. The aircraft landed
individually in such a way that one aircraft touched ground while the
other was still taxiing. After the air activity, the aircraft were

2. On 24 September, the AA gun emplacement in the northwestern part
of the field was occupied by 8x 76-mm AA guns. four 37-mm AA guns
were seen in an emplacement 100 meters southeast of the Rudolfshoehe
Settlement. Possibilities of observation were limited.
On 23 October, 6 x 76-mm AA guns were seen in the emplacement in
the northwestern part of the field. Eight motor vehicles were
parked in the shed at the AA gun emplacement. Three 37-mm AA guns
were seen in the emplacement near the Rudelfshoehe Settlement. It
was believed that not all guns could be seen there. 2
3. On 24 September and 23 October, 2 radio trucks were parked at the
take-off point at the eastern end of the runway at a distance of
about 150 meters from east to west. The antenna mast which was
about 20 meters high was braced once and had a funnel-shaped
device on top. Two other radio trucks with rod antennas were
standing to the west. A PKV-45 (D/F) station, a radio truck with
broom-shaped antenna and another radio truck
were seen in the eastern extension of the runway south of
Hirschfelde. A radio installation of one mast was seen next to
the latter radio truck. One Kniferest-type and one Fishnet-type
radar set were seen in the western part of the field north of
the woods. An AA 4 MK 3-type radar set was seen about 200 meters
south of the AA gun emplacement in the northwestern part of the

aircraft made individual and formation flights. Up to 4 aircraft
were seen alof~ during individual flying. Formations consisted
of up to 12 aircraft.
4 Jctober. Aircraft parked at the field included about 24 in front
of the hangars and 4 at the runway. Each aircraft had a crew of
five men, four of whom entered the aircraft in front, the fifth in the
rear.

6. On 4 October, there was no air activity. There was a closed ceiling
at a low altitude, rain and fair visibility. I1-28s parked at the
field included an undetermined number at he northern ed

7. On 4 October, an AA 4 MK 3-type radar set was seen in the north-
western corner of the field. 3 The AA gun emplacement in the
northwestern part of the field was occupied by about 5 AA guns
of medium caliber. 2
8. On 4 October, the AA barracks located in the angle formed by the
Wegendorf-Werneuchen and Wesendahl-Werneuchen roads southwest of
the field appeared to be fully occupied. A sentry wearing red-
bordered black epaulets was posted at the gate at the Werneuchen-
Wesendahl road. The apartment houses adjacent to the northwest
were occupied by Soviet dependents. The barracks in the southern
part of the field could not be seen. The Werneuchen-Wesendahl road
was blocked. Many officers and Eh7 wearing black-bordered blue epaulets
were seen going toward and comming from the direction of the town. 1
On 24 October, the AA gun emplacement in the northwestern corner
of the field was occupied by 6 AA guns of medium caliber. 2
10. In early October, parachuting from a Li-2 which approached from
the direction of Werneuchen was practiced over the former Strausberg
airfield. Similar practices had been observed previously. Several
soldiers wearing leather jackets and dark-blue shirts jumped. Their
parachutes opened at various altitudes. The parachutes used were
square and rounded off at the corners. Besides the soldiers an
equal number of parachutes, about 50 cm in diameter, fitted with
red cloths, 40 x 250 cm, were dropped from the aircraft. After
landing these parachutes were picked up by the soldiers. All
parachutists carried a parachute container on their backs and
another, a smaller one, on their breasts. After a local flight,
the Li-2 returned in the direction of Werneuchen while the soldiers
returned in the same direction in motor vehicles including
