1. The majority of veteran high-ranking officers who-were retained.iri the Bulgarian
Army after 1914 due to their qualifications and to the lack of politically reliable
experienced officers to replace them, were retired on pensions in early November
1951. Included werea number of officers below pension age, and their right to
draw pensions was granted through a special decree of the Council of Ministers.
Informant believes this unexpected move is the final 'ridding from the Army of
non-Communist-elements.
2. The subject of a recent lecture held for officials of the Ministry of Defense
was "The end of the transition period." 25X1
3. Reserve officers are receiving summons to appear at rally points in schools where
they are asked to fill in a questionnaire similar to that of 1917. Questions
about relatives outside Bulgaria and their reasons for staying abroad, as well as
any changes in the officer's state of health since the last examinatti.on by a
medical board, are included in the new forms.' A curriculum vitae is to be inserted
at the end of the form. The officers must, hand in four small and two larger
photographs; only two photographs were required in 1917. Informant believes
that the Officers' Reserve Booklets will be exchanged in the near future.
