of Railroads visited the Frankfurt/Oder headquarters controlling brigais
locomotives and made inquiries about loconoLlive brLgade pareo.:nol which

L Gc,n~ rzM~t t . c;ontirms the previously reported parking sites for the
former co1,-urin locomotives which have . been assigned to the so-called
"operatins? e serve" at the disposal of the Ministry of E&4,1roads and
the RBDs.
former column locomotives were assigned as follows:
Numbe_ of Locomotives RBD
197 Berlin
21 Gre if swald
.4 Schwerin
63 Halle
42 Cottbus
'36
-.Magdeburg
From this pool of locomotives, 20 units were transferred to Soviet locomotive
orlumn No 42, and 72 were rented to the Poles.
2. I Comment. This information is received or the first time. Thirty
locomotives would represent the equipment of only one deactivated locomotive
column. Or. 1 July 1954, 5 locomotive columns each consisting of 25 to 30
brigades were operational, 4 of them in Frankfurt/Oder, I in Cottbus, while
the equipment of 7 locomotive columns was arked as a reserve at various
railroad stations.
TIe reactivation of 30 locomotive brigades would make possible the handling
of 5 to 6 trains per day assuming that the average time required for a
full trip between the GDR qnd the USSR is 5 ,qr 6 days. The present volume
of Soviet. transit traffic through Poland is much higher. It is possible,
however, that the new German locomotive brigades are to be used for
mili uaay shipmea-its for which special secrecy regulations apply, possibly
also for uranium ore shipments. No information has been received on
sabotage acts against Soviet trains in Poland. The only fact known is that trips
made by Scviet trains operating through Poland have taken longer since the
deactivation of the German locomotive columns.
