1. The total population of Poland is approximately 27 million, and its area is
111,730 square kilometers. The density of population is 80 persons per square
kilometer. In 1938 the natural growth of population was 10.7 percent, and in
1953 it reached 19.5 percent. The largest growth, as high as 27.6 percent,
occurred in the occupied areas.
2. Poland has 715 towns with a total population of 9,500,000. Of this number 135
towns have over 10,000 inhabitants; 60 have over 20,000 inhabitants; and 16
have over 100,000 inhabitants.

Poor health of babies, premature births, and labor irregularities cause 41.2
percent of the above figures, while infectious diseases and tuberculosis cause
9.2 percent. The highest infant mortality for 1953 occurred in the Lodz dis-
trict (10.9 per 100), in Bytom (12.5 per 100), and in Silesia (11 per 100).
