Information
1. The following air activity and aircraft were observed at Groseenhain
airfield between 19 October and 8 November 1954:
19 October. No air activity was conducted. Between 1830 and 2130,a
searchlight was in operation at the field.
20 October. A MiG-15 or U'..MiG-15 took off at 0915, 0920, 0930 and 0935
and made small local-flights.
21 to 24 October. No air activity was observed.
25 to 28 October. There was no air activity except on 26 October when a
Po-2 landed at 1010 and took off at 1110.
29 October. Between 1005 and 1030, local flights were made by MiG-15s or
U--MiG-158 at an altitude of 200 meters. Twelve swept-back jet fighters were
seen on the landing field in the vicinity of the large easternmost hangar.
One MiG.'15 or U-MiG-15 which was ready to take off was parked at the eastern
end of the main runway. The take-off of the plane was not observed. About
25 meters from this aircraft'there were aproximately 12 soldiers standing
around another MiG-15 or U-MiG-15. Two of the soldiers. were engaged in some
unidentified work on the cabin. It appeared as if some type of instruction
was being given. The alert formation of 4 TL iG-15s or U-L iG-15s L_ -J 25X1
was parked in front of small,house which was located
about 50 meters ..rom the southern edge of the runway extension. A total of 18
MiG-158 or U-MiG-15a were seen on the field.
30 to 8 November. No air activity was observed. The possibilities were
limited. i--
2. No changes were observed on the radio installations or radar stations at
the field.
3. The dispersal area of the alert unit was located just northwest of a newly
erected small building. This buildings apparently a one-family house, and
sets east of the temporary building located on the southern edge at the
eastern end of the extension of the main runway. This area in close to the
board fence ?'?hich surrounds the field. The site of the former dispersal area

at the southern end of the &=S auxiliary runway, where excavation
work was previously observed, was again graded. The board fence
along the southern edge of the landing field to as far as this site
was about 50 meters from the railroad line and ran parallel. It
began at the eastern sideb.f the factory area. 2
4., A small tower-like superstructure which was glassed on all sides
and covered by a vaulted roof was seen on the middle sect-ion of the
roof of the eastern hangar. It could not be determined for what purpose
this van-like superstructure was to serve or if was being used. A short
mast with a red obstacle light was fitted on the southeastern corner cif
the hangar. 3
5., No changes were observed near the AA gun emplacement in the -southern
section of the field. Each of the 6 x 37-mm AA guns was occupied by a man0

1Comment,. It is believed that Grossenhain airfield is still occupied 25X1

Comment. The glassed-in observations tower on the eastern hangar 25X1
furnishee the best of the landing field and the runways. The utilization of
this tower has not been determined.
