1. In accordance with the plan for the electrification of Bulgaria, a hydro-electric
power project is in the process of construction between Batak (N 41-57, E 24-11),
Peshtera Okoliya, and'Debrashtitsa (N 42-05, E 24-15), Pazardshik Okoliya. Work
on the project began in 1953 and is scheduled for completion in 1958. An unknown
number of Trudovaks and civilian workers are employed on the project.
2. The Batak-Debrashtitsa hydro-electric power project will consist of a canal system
from Ratak to Debrashtitsa, three dawn with hydro-electric power plants,land an
artificial lake at Batak.
3. One of the dams and electric-generating plants will be constructed in the vicinity
of Batak, another at a point five to six kilometers southwest of Peshtera, and the
third in the vicinity of Debrashtitsa. The dam and power plant at Ratak will be
the largest of the three.
The artificial lake, 15 kilometers long and seven to eight kilometers wide, will be
formed back of the Ratak dam on the latak plateau, and will be fed by streams in the
vicinity and by water from the Vasil tolarov dam, 40 kilometers southwest of Peshtera.
Water from the Vasil Rolarov dam, completed in 1952, will be brought to the Ratak dam
through a tunnel.
5. The canal system for the Batak-Debrashtitsa project will consist partly of open canals
and partly of tunnels. In the suer of 1954, construction of the tunnels was in
progress.
Comment: According to labotnicheako Delo, 13 July 1954, the three power
stations o the atak power system, are the a VETS (Hydroelectric Power Station)
the "Pe$hterra" VETS, .and the NAleko" PETS.
