PAGES REMARKS CLASSIFICATION SECRET East Germany Surveying in the Luebbenau Area DATE PREPARED 4 January 1955 ENCLOSURES (NO. & TYPE) The entire procedure lasted abo* 8 minutes. Subsequegtly, the box ?aas closed again and taken by the officer to the next point. The box had no electric connections but apparently was fitted with 2 wires at each narrow side. It could not be determined whether the two wires were connected to the ground at the individual points of surveying. No sounds were heard from the box while surveying work wfs done. instruments and wrote the figures From l6oo until darkness on 1 November 1954, 1 Soviet officer and 2 soldiers wearing red-bordered black epaulets conducted surveying work in the Luebbenau area. They used a very heavy box about 40 x 20 x 20 on. Surveying was done at 6 points located in the Dubkowmuehl4 - Leipe terrain, southwest of the main branch of the Spree River, in an area which was partially very wet and partially inundated and wovered with light undulations. The 6 points, 50 meters apart, were located on a line extending from southeast to northwest. Surveying was also done at 3 points located 100 meters southwest and 3 points northeast of the line. At each point, the officer put the box on the ground, opened the lid of the box, waited for 2 or 3 minutes, then read some figures off of unidentified Comment. The purpose of surveying work in the Luebbenau area. 25X1 surveyed terrain. is not known.
