1. Between 1300 and 1400 hours on 25 August 195, a formation of Soviet naval vessels
was observed in a position near N 7120, E 30-00 proceeding on a northwesterly
course at a speed of 15 to 20 knots. The observation distance war, 10 to 15 25X1
nautical miles. (See sketch below.)
2. The formation was composed of three large vessels and about ten smaller vessels.
Two of the large units were of the cruiser type with two guns forward, a heavy tower
mast, and two stacks. The smaller craft were destroyer type vessels with large
sheer and low freeboard and two large stacks placed close together. The vessels
discharged a heavy exhaust smoke at intervals.
3. On the morning of 1 September, a large vessel, similar to the two cruiser-type
vessels seen in formation on 25 August, was sighted on a northwesterly course
in position N 65-00, E 08-00.
