Although the distance from the source of light was about 12 miles, the beam of light and the luminous source were clearly visible. It appeared that the search- light was emplaced in an elevated position. 2. During the same night and only a little later,~a second searchlight was observed close' to Vilsandi Lighthouse. This searchlight, of about the same power, also swept a large sector of the sea at irregular intervals and quite at random. The intervals were sometimes rather long. This searchlight was observed for about one hour. The approximate position of the searchlight was 58?231N/21051'E. 3. At about 0500 on 24 August 1954, a third searchlight was observed at the south entrance to Irben Strait. This source of light also was visible at,a great distance and could be clearly made out. The position of this searchlight was identified as that of Oviei Lighthouse. During all these observations, the search- light beams were directed toward the sea and never swept the skies.
