VEB Synthesewerk Schwarzheide: Production and Uee of Synthesis Contacts During, the Third Quarter, 1954. NO. OF PAGES 2. Export of Contacts to the USSR 21 February 1955 THE SOURCE EVALUATIONS IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINITIVE. THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) 25X1 During the third quarter of 1954, VEB Synthesewerk Schwarzheidel had 205 contact ovens, i.e. 13 more than the enterprise had a year before when it still was under SAG administration. The following table lists the number of contact ovens during the third quarter of 1953, the second quarter of 1954 and the third quarter of 1954. The table also lists the average number of ovens in operation during those periods and the rate of exploitation, i.e. the ratio between the number of ovens in operation and the total number of ovens. From the following table the ingredients of''the cobalt synthesis con- tacts2 can be seen. The table also lists the amount of each ingred- ient which was consumed per ton of cobalt produced during the third quarter of 1954. Included in the list are the amounts of ammonia, steam, water and electric power consumed per ton of c third quarter of 1.954. oba lt during the Ingredient _ _ _ _ ` ` - _ _ _ Unit Am pe oun r T t Used on of Coba lt Kieselguhr metric tons 2. 1 Soda metric tons 3. 8 Nitric acid (100% HNO3) metric tons 4.43 0 16 Sodium chloride metric tons . The enterprise produces contacts in its own contact faotort.,r. During the third quarter of 1954, the contact factory produced 187 contacts which contained a total of 183.393 tons of cobalt, 7.388 tons of thor- ium dioxide and 16.293 tons of magnesium oxide. During the same period the contact factory produced 18 contacts for export to the USSR which contained a total of 18.935 tons of cobalt, 0.953 tons of thorium di? oxide, and 1.534 tons of magnesium osid&. During the second quarter of 1954, the factory produced 1.3_.caritacts-:and delivered them to the USSR, and during the third quarter of 19)3, 12 contacts. 4. The contacts produced in the contact factory of the enterprise during the third quarter of 1954 for use inthe enterprise on the average con- tained 981 kg. of cobalt, 39.5 kg. of thorium dioxide, and 87 kg. of magnesium per contact. The contacts produced in the contact factory during the third quarter of 1954 for ex;'ort to the USSR on the average contained 1,052 kg. of cobalt, 52.9 kg. of thorium dioxide and 85 kg. of magnesium per contact. 5.
