PLACE ACQUIRED DATE ACQUIRED Nos (N 68-109 E 39-4g 9 16 small naval vessels passed at a distance of about 10 miles on a northwesterly course. All vessels except the last steamed in groups of three in diagonal formation with about 200 meters' distance between each ship, and about one mile between each group (See sketch No, 1 on page 2). The speed was probably 20 to 25 knots, The last vessel followed the others and was on the same course. All the vessels were alike. They were very small, probably MTBs, and had sharply raked bows with square cruiser sterns. Each ship had a low bridge, two masts, and no stack. There was one gun cover- ed by a tarpaulin on the afterdeck, and a cylindrical object on the deck amid- 25X1 ships, also covered by a tarpaulin, when the chip 25X1 was off Danilov Island - -439 41-05). one large and three small naval vessels had been seen on a northerly course, 3e the pilot station was 25X1 located at ape Letniy Urlov 64-552 '3b-27). and the ship continued on into the mouth of the inlet at Onega, where it anchored. After a half-hour a pilot came out in a tugboat from Onega. There was some talk of a 100-ruble fine for not having taken on a pilot at Cape Letniy Orlov, but nothing came of it, 4. The timber-quay was long enough. to take three small cargo vessels. Only the two farther quay spaces could be used for loading, while the innermost space was merely used for waitin At the middle: ouay sace the de th at low tide was about 12 feet, 5. Near the quay there were two sawmills. One was at Nd, 4 on the German map of the town, and was an old-mill which was in operation, The other was at No, 5 and was new -and, very- mo4ern',- but, not- in operation, 6. No railroad traffic was observed in-the vicinity of the harbors USSR (Arctic) Port of Onega DATE DISTR. 15 March 1955: REQUIREMENT REFERENCES NO. All the harbor offices at Onega were in a building located in the center of square C %I on the German map. 8. The Seamen's Club was the largest building in the harbor area. It is probably the T-shaped building in square C-X on the German map. The main part of the building had three stories and was used only by Soviet nationals. The international club was in-one wing, and consisted of a large clubroom containing magazines and propaganda material as well as a phonograph and a to e-recorder. There was also a room for table tennis, and a room believed to-be the'office. This wing had only two floors See-sketch No. 2 on page 3). The only club employee observed was one woman; 9. Two passenger vessel-9---were-observed in the area of Onega. One passed close to the--shore going from Glubokiy Point (N64-21., E 37-20) to Lyamtsa (N 64-27, E 37..05). It was judged to be between 2 ,000 and 3 000 , , tons. The other ship was somewhat smaller. 10. At Cape Letniy Orlov a seagoing tugboat was observed towing two large steel barges loaded with lumber, and headed in the direction of Belomorsk.
