The'first two 10-ton Siemens-Martin furnaces and a pneumatic hammer had been installed by the end of 1949. In 1950, the construction of a foundry for casting steel was begun but was suspended in favor of an electric steel plant. c, VEB Edelatahl Doehlen was affected severely by the order to stop con- struction work issued by the East German Government in 1953 following the events of June 17. Originally, it was planned for Doehlen to become the most important source of supply for the East German arma- ment industry and to occupy a key position in the iron and steel industry. ' d. Discussions are in progress for the immediate and accelerated execution of at least the original project within the framework of East German rearmament. 2. The scheduled erection of eight more 10-ton electric furnaces for the steel pla t.has been postponed. b. The long-planned erection of two 20-ton Siemens-Martin furnaces was begun, but construction has again come to a standstill because of at. shortage of even the most essential . construction materials. However, every effort is being made to install these furnaces. c. The following equipment was originally scheduled for the steel foundry: Two 5-ton electric furnaces One 3.5 ton electric furnace One 10,-ton electric furnace Of these only the 3.5 ton furnace remained in the plan revised according to directives of New Course. Installation of this furnace, which should have been completed in 1954, has been delayed because of shortages of . materials and is unlikely to be completed until the first quarter of 1955 at the earliest. d. Installations planned for the rolling mills are as follows: One 830 two-higIp X, `} cogging train. Cne 700 two-high >cogging train One 600 three-high rolling train One 450 fine roll train e. The 830 and 700 cogging trains were to have been supplied by VEB Schwermaschinenbau Heinrich Rau, Wildau; the other two trains were to have come from Czechoslovakia. The initial plans for these rolling mills were modified several times and became abortive when the New Course came into beinga f. The installation of rolling trains at*Doehlen remains in suspension. The same applies to a 2,000 ton forging press. Approved For Release 2008/07/09: CIA-RDP80-0081 OA006100330003-8
