1. There are 812 escapees from the Satellites who wish to emigrate from Yugo-
slavia now being held in one camp in the north of that country. These are
"all who wish to emigrate". Six hundred of these persons are men, 212
women. Six hundred thirty-nine are Albanians, 54 Hungarians, 2 Greek
Macedonians, 23 Rumanians, one stateless, 87 Bulgarians, five Czechs and
one Pole. The majority of these persons are between the ages of 18 and
24, but there are 40 persons over 60 years of age and 95 are children
less than five years of age. Two hundred fifty-seven are farmers, and
121 are housewives. There are 401 who wish to emigrate to the United States,
190 to Australia and 154 to Canada. The overall figure of escapees in
Yugoslavia is difficult to determine.)
2. The Yugoslav authorities are receptive to the idea of allowing a fixed
number of these persons to leave on a monthly basis if it were impossible
to move the group as a whole. The Yugoslav Government is unwilling,
however, to allow agencies like the Red Cross to have contact with these
refugees, on the grounds that the resulting publicity could be used by the
USSR and the Satellites to pressure Yugoslavia for access to the refugees.
The Yugoslavs are willing, however to provide complete dossiers in each
case.
Comment: An effort will be made to provide accurate statis-
tics on the total number of Satellite refugees in Yugoslavia.
Comment: On 7 March, reported that 100 Bul-
garian-escapees being held in a camp at Stari Becej in the Vojvodina also
wish to go to the West.
