The harbor at Melnik (N49-51, E17-16)was constructed and put into use in 25X1 1937. Since then,-apart from two added warehouses, nothing has changed. There is not much activity in the harbor at present; mostly rice and salt are unloaded there., Four ships can be loaded at the same time '.and the harbor can take ships up to ]eOO tons.. About 70 men are permanently employed at the harbor. 25X1 Legend for the attached .sketch: (l) Harbor canal branching off the east bank of the Elbe River and running due-.east for.about 350 m., then dividing into two branches. Both branches are about 11.00 m. long and 60 in.. wide and run parallel in a southeastern direction. The . mouth. of the canal is about. 40 in. wide.and 4 m., deep. Of the two branches the western fors _ the proper harbor. The sides of this branch are concreted. On the peninsula, which is about 100 m. wide and 400 m. long between the two branches, are loading cranes and reloading installations. Twowarehouses., brick , one story only,, each 110 x 40 m.; the first was built in 1937, the second in 1942. Each contains a small apartment for the warehouseman. (6) Electric transformer for the harbor. (7) Warehouse building for reloading,., built of corrugated metal with iron (8) (5) framewvrk,,,70 x 30 m. The building is used. when the harbor is full and was erecte'd specifically for this purpose during the war. Customs and CSPLO (Czechoslovak Elbe-Oder/Navigation) offices.,. ;comprising -a small,., brick . , One'-story customs office and, next to it-, a smaller wooden building for CSPLO office. Stores belonging formerly to the Vacuum Oil Company and having underground tanks,, (10) New ahip$lding installation, built between 1950 and March 1954. It is a rei csrced concrete building,about 150 x 60 m. The shipway runs from north to south into the eastern branch. of the harbor canal. (11) Former :sawmill, later used for the manufacture of Perun washing machines, now converted into a shipbulding installation,.; brick,.ab'out 80 x 40 m.. Pontoons for the army are built there at present; later it is 'to be used, as a repair shop for the. CSC --, w p ships. Up to now about 400 workers have been employed there.
