In the fall of 1954, the East German government was faced with the r.~r.: ..:. decision as to what enterprise should be entrusted with tre task of germaaiua traasister defslopment and eventually with trans sistos production. Tke two eo^Ipeting enterprises were MM Work fuer Baulemente der Daehridhtentesbaik (Drrslovid) In Teltow, and TED Work f'uer terimeldewesen (formerly 08)1- in Berlin-Oberschoensweide. A preliminary decision reached at that time favored the Dralo'wid plant as the one to be exclusively .barged with transistor development and productionl. The Berlin-Obersohoeneweide enterprise, however, did not give .up hopes of also obtaining C'everaant grders and allocation of funds for transistor development and production . These hopes were many based on the excellent political connections existing between the Berlin- Oberschoeneweide enterprise and the government* set for 10 January 1955. 3. By 10 January 1955, the Dralowid plant had sent transistor samples to Dresden. The Berlin-Oberschoeneweide enterprise had not sent samples there but excused itself, by a letter to Fruehauf, ftr its inability to meet the deadline. 2. Because of the continuous efforts of the Berlin-Oberschoeneweide enter- prise, the government eventually r'evsrsed its preliminary dediiioa and ordered a competition to be held between the two enterprises. The coapetilba was based on a contract drawn up in exact terms which establish ed the conditions of the competition and the obligations of the two enterprises. oacording to the terms of this contract both eterpises had to forward samples of transistors to Prof. _'$ans Fruehauf, , of Dresden Technical University, who was appointed arbitrators The deadline was W1 IX This material contains information affecting the National Defense of the United States within the meaning of the Espionage Laws, Title 18, U.S.C.
