COUNTRY usm REPORT Cultural Rivalry between Leningrad and Moscow DATE DISTR. NO. OF PAGES MAR 231954 REQUIREMENT NO. RD REFERENCES THE SOURCE EVALUATIONS IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINITIVE. THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) 1. Although Moscow is the old, traditional capital of Russia, Leningrad is considered by present-day Soviets to be the most desirable city in which to live and work. Its citizens constantly strive for independence in cultural things as well as in political issues. It is, or has been, a publishing center for books and magazines, but the Jealous influence of Moscow has been felt in the replacement of key persomnel and in actual suppression of publications. 2. Moscow is considered an overgrown village, but Leningrad is more cosmopolitan. The people are cultured and polite in restaurants and theatres and on the street. It is a quieter and cleaner city. Many l4isoovites regularly spend their vacations there and more would move to Leningrad permanently if they could find suitable jobs.
