1.I ISoviet destroyer put into Leningrad har- 25X1
bor. The destroyer proceeded at slow speed and after dropping anchor contin-
ued to move slowly, obviously pulling the anchor, and barely avoided fouling
its anchor chain with the chain of another.ship.- The destroyer scraped the
bow of the other ship with its stern and finally stopped. Considerable con-
fusion prevailed on the deck of the destroyer, and swearing and raging could
be heard from the destroyer's loudspeakers. Three harbor tugboats approached 25X1
the destroyer but could not make their lines fast since their ropes dropped
into the water from the destroyer's deck. The engines of the destroyer re-
mained stopped all through the maneuver,. It seemed that the standard of train-
ing of the crew of the destroyer was'~ather low, since no measures were appar-
ently taken to prevent a collision.
2. The destroyerEJad an estimated length of 130 to 140 meters, a raked atoms a 25X1
twin turret with guns of an estimated 105 millimeter caliber on the forecastle
deck. Two single torpedo tubes, one each on the port and the starboard side of
the destroyer, were mounted aft of the forward'i smokestack and aft of the after
smokestack. Another 105-am caliber twin turret, similar to that mounted on the
forecastle deck, was seen on the fantail. In addition, the destroyer was armed
with four-barreled 37. to 40-m caliber machine guns. The four-barreled machine
guns were mounted on pedestals, one four-barreled machine gun being installed
between the foreward gun turret and the bridge, two between the aftermast (in
front of the after smokestack), and one four-barreled machine gun aft of the after
mast. Four depth charge throwers were mounted on the deck, two each on the port
and starboard aide of. the after smokestack and, just aft of then, six mines with
red buoys, in groups of three on the port and starboard side. The mines were
placed on dollies and had the shape of an oblong ellipse. A large number of
mines stood on mine rails laid on the port and starboard side of the fantail.
The fantail was full of mines' (sic). The flush deck extended straight from the
stem to the rounded transom stern. A road rangefinder standing on a dome-shaped

substructure was mounted atop the box-shaped armored bridge, and a braced
tripod mast was seen just aft of the bridge. The top of the mast oarr4.ed
a platform with two radar scanners, the after one being a little higher
than the other. A direction finder frame (D/P loop) was mounted below the
platform. A stump antenna was fitted at the after end of the platform,
from which an antenna line led down to the bridge. The after mast stood
in front of the after smokestack. It also was of the braced tripod-type
of mast and carried a radar scanner atop. The rangefinder on the bridge
was spherical and 2.5 to 3 meters in diameter. Four tubes projected from
this sphere, one each on the port and starboard side, one forward and one
aft in the sphere pointing upwards. Other rangefinders were mounted be-
tween the forward turret and the four-barreled AA gun in front of the bridge,
and between the after turret and the torpedo tube aft of the after smoke-
stack. The two radar devices were mounted on heavy substructures. A tube
on the substructure carried a square box with a smaller box at one end and
a bowl-shaped gear with a dipole held by three rods and fitted right in the
middle of the bowl. The twin turrets were described as follows: The rear
"Qoes of the turrets, were straight and vertical, while the front faces were
curved. An entrance flap fitted on the side was accessible from the deck
over a step. Climbing irons at tbe.side.of the entrance flap lead to the
roof of the turret. A cupola, painted in glossy grayish-green color, was
fitted a little aside from and above the gun barrels on the right-hand side
of the front face of the turret. The cupola seemed to be made of bakel.ite;
it was not made of steel. Another cupola, painted in the same gray color
as the turret, was seen on the opposite side of the front face and level
with the bakelite cupola. The latter cupola was open forward and the open-
ing had a plexiglas casing. It seemed that the destroyer was a new vessel
just coming from the building shipyard. Her coat of paint was no longer
wet and certain damage to the paint was observed, which probably had occurred
on the occasion of berthing maneuvers or had been caused by seawater or in-
fluence of the weather.
