Penicillin was either solidified or watery. Vitamin preparations were generally bought up by the drug clerks in their own right and then gold privately. 25X1 These purchases ere made with the aid of doctors' prescriptions issued to fictitious persons. Doctors gladly performed this service for the druggists since they, the doctors themselves, frequently purchased stocks of drugs for speculation. Apothecaries in the Lodz area are being called into military service. They are given one-month courses and then retained in the army. They are given officers' rank. 3. During January, butchers' shops in Lodz were without meat some two or three days in the week. Butter was sold with a margarine content of 40 percent. 4. During January the electric current in the evening hours was so weak that the lights shone with an intensity of scarcely 50 percent. Some streetcar lines in Lodz, including No. 11, maintained service with only two-car unite to avoid the ',)'arni.ng out of weak, overloaded motors.
