Dru s ^n.;i phi.rma.ceuti.cals delivered tPLodz druggists during January 1955 were
glriost e-rclusively spoiled goods and had to be returned to the warehouses.
Penicillin was either solidified or watery. Vitamin preparations were generally
bought up by the drug clerks in their own right and then gold privately. 25X1
These purchases ere made with the aid of doctors' prescriptions issued to
fictitious persons. Doctors gladly performed this service for the druggists
since they, the doctors themselves, frequently purchased stocks of drugs for
speculation.
Apothecaries in the Lodz area are being called into military service. They
are given one-month courses and then retained in the army. They are given
officers' rank.
3. During January, butchers' shops in Lodz were without meat some two or three days
in the week. Butter was sold with a margarine content of 40 percent.
4. During January the electric current in the evening hours was so weak that the
lights shone with an intensity of scarcely 50 percent. Some streetcar lines
in Lodz, including No. 11, maintained service with only two-car unite to avoid
the ',)'arni.ng out of weak, overloaded motors.
