On the sates day peoplg living in Tientsia were questioned during a search for suspicious iridividw-1s. With a heavy loss, a freight car was overturned at the damaged section of the rai1wE25X1 the following areas: 2. A large ntmtber of Chinese Com~unist troops, approximately, 50,000 to 60,000 men, recently arrived in Tientsin. They were mostly young soldiers about 20 years of age, and they spoke with a northern Chinese accent. It was rumored that they were redeployed from North Korea. these troops were stationed in 25X1 b. At the Jen Teo (0086/0155) warehouse located at the end section of Chieh Fang (6037/2397) Road. Guards observed in the vicinity of T'angku wore waist and autmunition belts made of cloth, green-colored unit'oz7RS, and black rubber shoes. They were armed with drimm-type machine guns. These guards wore no insignia except a patch stating that they were members of the army of liberation and a blank red strip of cloth on their chests. c. Warehouses in the area extending ,from the Chao Shang Chu (2156/0794/l~~) (China Merchant Steam IQavigation'Cospany) Pier towards the harbor were occupied by about 10,000 soldiers. These troops wore grass-green quilted cotton uniforms and spoke with a Taman accent. Apparently they had been sent there for rest, and they seemed in high spirits. These troops seemed to be sleeping on the floors of the houses, because the floors were covered entirely with straw. 3. Many soldiers were in Tientsin markets and on main streets. Soldiers comprised an estimated two-thirds of Tientsin theater audiences. When going in and out of theaters the soldiers pushed and crowded each other as if they had little discipline.
