city of Tientsin. These troops wore grass-green quilted cotton uniforms and
spoke with a Taman accent. Apparently they had been sent there for rest,
and they seemed in high spirits. These troops seemed to be sleeping on the
floors of the houses, because the floors were covered entirely with straw.
3. Many soldiers were in Tientsin markets and on main streets. Soldiers comprised
an estimated two-thirds of Tientsin theater audiences. When going in and out
of theaters the soldiers pushed and crowded each other as if they had little
discipline. Civilians usually tried to avoid the soldiers.
