pendent of him to some extent. For example, his mail cannot be opened by

1. VEB Naschinenfabrik NEMA, Netzschkau, employs approximately 2,000
persons, not more than 1,300 of whom are directly involved in production.
The remainder are transport workers, workers who prepare materials for
final production (for example, sheet metal cutters), warehouse and super-
visory personnel. Apprmrimately 20 engineers work at the plant.

4. Plant director Rossig was not considered very capable. The technical
staff was generally anti-Communist, and most of the personnel, particularly
technical chief Walz, were kept in the plant only because no suitable re-
placements could be found. Of the 60 persons closely co_Anected with the
technical department, only two were SED members.
5. The 19115 plan for the plant, expressed in Werkabgabepreise, was
30,000,000 DIN. The plan was only 87% fulfilled. The underf ulfil] sent was
dui to the following reasons:
as The sheet metal and structural metal.- such as I-beams, braces, etc.,
needed for production were in very short supply.
be Small metal parts, such as screws, bolts, etc., were unavailable and
had to be produced at the plant.
c. The plan was in a continual state of flux. For example, the produc-
tion of threshers was called off and then started again.
6. Production at VEB Maschinenfabrik NEMA, Netzschkau, is divided into
two major components: agricultural machinery production and the production
of heating, ventilating and refrigerating equipment*
a. The agricultural machinery department employs about 300 people.
1) Threshers: in 1954, the plant produced an avera?e of about 30
threshers per month. Each threshes'. is valued at 10,000 I!M$. In August
of 1954, this production was halted and the employees were shifted to the
production of ventilators.
2) Straw balers (Strohpressen): approximately 200 straw balers are
produced per months
be Refrigeration equipment.
1) Cold storage plants: in 1954, five cold storage plants were pro-
duced for East German cities. None are planned for 1955. ,
2) Refrigerator cars: approximately 55 refrigerator cars were pro-
duced in 1954. Only five of these were retained for use in But Germany.
3) Thermobarokammern: about 25 of these units were produced in 1954
and 20 more are planned for 1955? All of them are sent to the iTtaSR. These
units are about 20 by 18 by 15 feet in size. They are used to produce low
temperatures and controlled pressures for testing materials.

a. Heating, ventilating and temperature control equipment.
1) Thermostat;,,,- for humidity and temperature control in industries
such as the meat-packing industry.
2) Ventilators: all the ventilators produced were for industrial
use and included a wide variety of special orders for I,ecial situations.
Between 500 and 600 various types of ventilators sae delivered to the
Wismrut :nines. Other types of blowers and exhaust fans were produced for
boilers. No accurate figures or production are know:! t7 the courc:e.
