Information
1. Although the cost of food is high even in cheap restaurants in Bucharest,
all these establishments nevertheless have a steady patronage. Most of
the young Communists who are single and have come to Bucharest from other
parts of the country, patronize all restaurants a great deal. E?v'en the
workers can afford to go to restaurants as most of them earn money on the
side from various "deals" or other jobs.
2. The average Rumanian worker can cheat on the job, reporting to work and
then sneaking out to do something else. E7veryone, from the lowest. to the
highest paid worker, steals from his place of work. That is why salaries
are so low; the Government knows what is going on, but cannot stop it.
3. Bread and other food is plentiful in Bucharest but such is not the case 25X1
elsewhere in Rumania. Food is very scarce in Sighisoara. Flour, for
instance, if available at all, costs I4 lei per kilogram while it is 4
lei in Bucharest. All the food is being shipped to Bucharest "to impress
