(FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) Poland is only carried out in one place Sosncw3ki (fnu) in v arsaw the initial stage. :namely the institute of Prof.25X1 this work has not progressed beyond semi-conductor research and development in 25X1 Poland suffers from the following;' S-E-C-R-E-T (Note: Washington distribution indicated by "X"; Field distribution by "#".) SECR-BT S-E-C-.RkET. -2- a. 4 very limited number of physicists specialize field. b. The Polish government so far has not agreed to make available for research and development the germanium occurring in Upper Silesia. .as a result the work carried out in Warsaw has so far been mainly con- cerned with the study of lead compounds, specifically of lead sulfide, lead selenide, and lead telluride. The Warsaw institute lacks important materials for its work. For instance, there is a permanent shortage of hard glass which has been imported, in insufficient quantities only, from Czechoslovakia. The institute also does not have any Dewar contain- ers. c. There is a serious shortage not only of scientists but also of skilled laboratory technicians. The situation is illustrated by the fact thct Sosnow3ki's institute in Warsaw has only one glass-blower?who also has to perform the glass-blowing work for two more scientific institutes in Warsaw. d. Government funds for semi-conductor work are insufficient. So far the 25X1 Polish government has nct shown much interest in this kind of work and 25X1 has supported it only hesitatingly.
