Location
20 June 1955
1. A military airfield, referred to as the New Airfield (Nova letiste), is
located north of the city of Olomouc, (Z 49-35, E 17-15), 1.5 kilometers
from the confluence of the Bystrice and Schantel rivers, in an area
described by the Olomouc-Bystrice railroad line and the Olomouc-Belkovice
and the Bys trovany: Drozdein roads. The field is rectangular, 2#500 m.
long and 1,800 m. wide, facing from northeast to southwest. The entire
field is surrounded on all sides byabarbed wire; the barracks. compounds have
their own additional baabe = The southwest corner is 1.5
kilometers from the confluence of the Bystrice and Schantel rivers, 1400
m. from the Olomouc-Bystrovany railroad line; the northwest corner is
2.5 kilometers from the southwest corner, 100 me east of the Olomouc-
Belkovice road; the southeast corner is 400 m. northwest of, the crossing
of the Olomouc-Bystrovany railroad and the Bystrovany-Drozdein hig Tway;
the northeast corner is one kilometer southwest of Samotisek Obec.
2,., The airfield was begun in 1950 and was completed in 1953. Currently, ex-
.pansion operations are in progress in the barracks. compounds. The old
airfield, located northwest of Olomouc, is now devoted to commercial flying.

A concrete highway leads from Bystrovany Obec to the eastern corner of the
field with a branch road leading to the southern flank. A co .ncrete. side
road also leads to'the barracks compound (Item 9.on sketch). An industrial
spur leads from the Olomouc-Bystrovany railroad line to the southeast corner
of the field and. to the main fuel depot (Item 12 of sketch). Another turnout
leads to the bar ks oompoa (Zter4 cun, sketch).
Electric power is supplied from the Olomouc Power Plant by underground cable.
The location of the cable is not known. The field has its own searchlight units;
details not available.. The runway is outlined, on both sides, with built-in lights,
spaced about 100 m. apart, Similarly, the. flanks of the field are outlined in
built-in lights.

Runways and Taxi Strips
5. The field has two diagonal runways., connecting the west and east corners
and the south and north corners. Each runway is made of concrete and is
65 in. wide (Item 1 of sketch),
6. A taxi strip runs parallel with the south flank of the field9 some 200 in,
north of the flank; it is 19600 in,, long. The strip does not-quite reach
the west or the east side of the field. The taxi s trip is 50 m. wide and
is made of reinforced concrete. (Item 2 of sketch). Where the taxi strip
crosses the west and east ends of the runway,, there is a 100 x 400 in. concrete
apron, on either side of the field (Item 3 of sketch). Some six concrete strips,
20 in. wide, lead from the runway, in a southerly direction., to the hangars,
Buildings
7. ix, hangars,, each measuring about 85 x 145 m.9 and built of concrete and brick
with slate roofs and sheet metal doors,, are located along the southern flank
of the field. The hangars are 100 m. apart.
8. The headquarters building is located along the southern flank. It is 20 x 60
m.,, has three stories,, a flat roof, and is painted gray. A control tower, 20 in.
high,, protrudes from the center of the roof. The tower also has a flat roof.
SeveralCuunidentifie-a adjoining structures and warehouse buildings are located
to the south of the hangars.
9. The barracks compounds (Items 7, 8 of sketch) are separated from the airfield
by a concrete road. The water for the barracks compounds is supplied from
wells located south of the airfield and west of Bistrovany Obec, on the
Bystrice River (Item 13 of sketch).
10. Barracks compound (Item 7) is located south of the headquarters building and
houses Czechoslovak Air Force personnel. The compound consists ofs
12 two-story buildings,, 60 x 80 in.
2 three-story buildings, 60 x 80 in.
2 workshop structures
1 gymnasium
12 one-story structures
1 boilerhouse for central heating
3 rows of garages and warehouses
1 sports field with swimming pool
U. Barracks compound (Item 8) houses the AA Artillery Regiment and consists of the
followings.
5 two-story structures
3 one-story structures
2 rows of garages
12. Barracks compound (Item 9) to the east is still under construction and will
provide housing for paratroop units. (Currently the paratroopers are housed
in the convent at Samitisek). The compound consists of:
2 jump towers already completed
6 two-story structures, 60 x 20 m,
1 one-story structures
1 row of garages
Most of these buildings are already completed up to their roofs. Interior work
on the buildings has only been started. This complex is surrounded by barbed
wire anchored on steel poles.
Motor Fuels and Ammunition
13. A fuel depot (Item 12 of sketch),, :measuring 250 x 100 m.,.)is located 150 m.
east of the east corner of the field and 150 in. south of the barracks compound
which is still under construction. Subterranean fuel storage tanks are located
in the above area. pipelines connect this location 25X1
with the aircraft dispersal areas., Item? ,3 of sketch). It is believed that this
fuel depot contains both aviation gasoline and jet fuels.

Each of the three barracks compounds has a corrugated iron building fore
storage of ammunition for use by the men housed in the compound, Details

15. A central ammunition depot is located in the valley near "

4 kilometers east of the airfield, in an area which is striR;tly., riled.and
closed off, The area a)ntains some 50 barracks-type buildings, located about
35 m. apart. Each building is surrounded by earth revetments, The entire
area is surrounded by barbed wire. Four guard, towers overlook the area
and are equipped with searchlights and machine guns. The entire arsenal is
overgrown with trees and bushes and well camouflaged against detection from
the air. Additional details not available,
Radio. Radar. and Meteorological Station
16. A radio antenna, which is bent at right angles and is mounted on a steel
mast 5 meters tall, supported by seven cables, is located on top of the
headquarters building roof.

and in the southeast corner of the field, when'in operation. All radar is
strictly guarded and can be observed only from a distance.

northwest of the north corner of the airfield, and is housed in an old farmhouse.
AA Emplacements
19. AA emplacements (Item 10 of sketch) are located 200 m,, west of the -southwest
corner of the field; 200 m. northwest of the northeast corner; 50 m, south of
the southern flank, and 200 mo east of the southwest corner, between the side
of the airfield and the Olomouc-Bystrovany railroad line; also 200 m.'e ast
of the barracks compound (Item 8); and in the southern corner of Drozdein Obec,
All the above positions are concrete and designed for four AL guns each. Near the
concrete emplacements are some earth emplacements and grass-covered dugouts
for rapid-firing AA cannon,
Blast shelters (Item 4 of sketch)
29. Blast shelters are located along the entire east flank of the field; their
exact number is not known, The shelters are surrounded by earth revetments.
