S-S-C-R-197T COUNTRY Poland SUBJECT Secret Trial of Members of an Underground Organization DATE OF INFO. PLACE ACQUIRED DATE ACQUIRED REPORT REFERENCES DATE DISTR. NO. OF PAGES REQUIREMENT NO. RD 27 May 1955 25X1 N 1. A number of persons arrested in July 1954 as members of an underground organization have been brought to trial. Sentences ranged up to 15 years in prison f or two defendants, with lighter terms for the remainder. These per sons were arrested during a swearing-in ceremony of a clandestine g ovear m+nent which was taking place secretly in the Aawel Church in Krakow. They had been betrayed by one of the organization who allegedly was not satisfied with the post he was to be given by this govermeiii t. 2. At the secret trial the accused were defended by three lawyers of Lawyers' Cooperative No. 25 in Warsaw, aaong whose members are Kant (fun), Mowwakosnki (fnu), and Nowogrodski (fau). The military prosecution tried to prove that the United States actually stands behind the activities of this group. The defendants claimed that they were not assisted by any foreign goverment or emigre organization. They intended only to prepare a goverment for Poland for the moment the present regime would collapse, and they had no intentions of assisting anyone in orer- throwing the present regime a They stressed the fact tha t they had no faith in the emigre organizations which have no under- standing for the new spirit in Poland. 3. The def n se built its case on the insane behavior of the defendants and their simple-mindedness, but the prosecution demanded severe punishment on grounds that this organization allegedly already had thousands of adherents, mainly ci tizens of Krakow.
