the peasants of Shunte (N 22-50, E 113-16) discovered that
the cooperatives were loading stored grain onto wooden junks to be shipped away.
Since the peasants did not themselves have enough to eat, they become angry and
began to block the river to atop the junks from sailing.. The local Communist
cadres cabled Canton for help and soon 200 armed men came in a steamer to put down
the 30 peasants who were fighting with their farm implements. As the conflict
went on, the soldiers opened fire, killing three peasants. The rest of the
peasants were driven away. Later, more than 20 peasants were arrested and
committed to reform by hard labor.
2. Although the Chinese Communist authorities imposed a ban on the circulation of
the story of this uprising, the country people kept on talking about it.
