1. Khimiko-Farmatsuticheski Zavod (the Chemical-Parmaceutical Factory), the
former Galenus Works, is located about 6-7 kilometers from the center of
Sofia in the direction of Ilientsi. The plant, which has been enlarged,
now consists of one large building and four small structures, which house
the production departments, a carpentry shop and a store room. The former
Opus Medical Factory in Sofia is now under the control of this factory,
2. The following production departments comprise the factory:
ON a. Inorganic drugs (Neoiilganicheski Otdel);
be Organic drugs (Organicheski Otdel);
3.

c. Sulfonamides (Sulfonamidi Otdel);
d. Antipyretics (Otdel Antipiretitsi);
e, Tablets (Tableten Otdel);
f. Ampoule-filling (Ampulen Otdel);
g. Dental materials (Zubolekarski Otdel);
h. Alkaloids (Otdel Alkaloidi); and
i. Organic preparations (Otdel Organopreparati).
The plant includes analytical, bacteriological, and experimental laboratories.
The inorganic section, which employs about 20 workers in one shift, produces
mainly barium, sodium, and magnesium sulphates in sufficient quantity to supply
the country. The necessary raw materials are supplied locally. The equipment
of this section consists of four 500-liter autoclaves, two or three filters, and
two drying cabinets.

izasen (izafen)and htalein-henol r- ~m-~ wo Q~ rsucu"u .ne, rimiron,
s p p , employs 15 workers. These drugs are
produced in insufficient quantity to fulfill national needs, and large
quantities of these drugs must be imported. The raw materials used for
this production are also imported: guanidine from the USSR; piridin and
phenol zinc, acetic acid and anhydride from Czecho-
slav
6. Until September 1954 the only product of the sulfonamides section, which
employs about 20 workers, was small quantities of streptocide album, The
component chemicals are imported. The equipment of the department, which
is old, includes four or five autoclaves and two centrifugal and drying
cabinets.
7. In 1954 the antipyretics department employed 1,5-20 workers, but production
was to be expanded in 1955 with the arrival of new machines from Hungary.
This department produces antipyrine, novalgine, piramidon, and chiefly,
aspirin- Difficulties accompanied the initial production of piramidon
according to the Soviet formula, as the Soviets refused to supply the raw
materials. Finally the materials were obtained principally from Western
Germany, with the remainder from Czechoslovakia. Of the requisites for
the production of aspirin, acetic acid is imported from Czechoslovakia
and salicylic acid from Rumania.
8. The tablet department employe about 80 workers.
9. The raw materials for the am pules section are principally imported from
Czechoslor and Hungary. The production of this
section does no sa a requirements of the country.
10. The dental materials) department was closed down in late
reorganization and 1954, prior to
expansion.
11. There are five or six workers in the alkaloids department, which produces
mainly morphine and dionin. In December 1954, a Soviet expert arrived to
instruct the Bulgarians in the production of other substances using mor-
phine as a base.
12. The organic department produces what were formerly Opus preparations. 1954 it was known to have started In
producing insulin,
13. The analytical laboratory employs seven chemists and pharmacists.
14. The laboratory for scientific experiments employs two chemical engineers,
who have been experimenting with methods of production of rimifon and
firmicon (?) since the middle of 1954. Experiments in the production of
novocaine and phencetin have also been made. In 1955 a Hungarian expert
was to arrive to assist in the production of the latter two drugs,
1,5. The bacteriology department employs only one doctor who is engaged in
research work.
16. All of the laboratories are located on the third floor of the central build-
ing of the Khimiko-Parmatsuticheski Zavod.
17. The following persons are known at the factory:
a. Nikola Gospodinov, director of the organic department; and
b, Bail Hadzhiev, director of the antipyretics department.
