Prior to his political liquidation, Milovan Djilas had numerous followers among the intellectuals, not only in the Federation of Communists of Yugo- slavia (FCY), but also among the general public. Party intellectuals sympdtA.ized with-Djilast ideas because they hoped that, should these ideas prevail, they would have a greater voice in Party affairs and have the opporttmity of replacing the uneducated and incompetent ex-Partisans now holding good Government positions. Leading personalities in the economic sphere,.welcomed the ideas of Djilas because they saw in their adoption the possibility of liberating the Yugoslav economy from Party and, police interference and the elimination of inefficiency and incompetency. Nationalists welcomed the Djilas theories because they considered them the first step in the disintegration of the FCY. 2. Djilas, apperently'was supported by Aleksandar Rankovic at one time. 3. It was, not difficult.for Kardelj to liquidate the Djilas movement, since even tlhe Party intellectuals regarded the Djilas program as vague and confusod.
