set in the southeastern corner of the barracks installation. The Kniferest
rotated frequently.
2. Hagenow radar station. On 22 March 1955, Hagenow radar station was still
occupied by 1 Token, 1 Kniferest and 1 Fishnet. The Dumbo which had been
additionally observed in the installation after August 1954 was dismantled
on 26 October 1954. The second Fishnet-type set which was removed on 9

elevated place. During storms on 21 or 22 December, no measures were
taken to secure the Token or the other sets. During January and February
1955, the Token and Kniferest still operated without any disturbances or
any protective measures against the weather.
During March 1955, the Token continuously operated every day from 1600
to 0900, while the Kniferest operated at irregular intervals.
Around 1600 on several days, 14 men wearing red-bordered black epaulets
relieved the operating personnel at the individual sets, after leaving
the barracks installation.2
3. Ludwigslust/Techentin radar station. On 25 January 1955, no changes were
observed on the radar station in the eastern section of the former
Ludwigslust/Techentin airfield. Motor vehicles observed about 50 km north
of the road to Karstaedt included

the Kniferest where the lines turned to the east toward the barracks
installations at the field. The exact course could not be observed.
On 25 January 1955, no special activity was observed in the radar
^tation. Six soldiers were seen near the group of motor vehicles and
4 soldiers near the Kniferest-type set.
4. Perleberg radar station. On 8 March 1955, the following radar sets were
observed in the installation:
1 Token
1 Kniferest
1 Fishnett
4 radio trucks.
Three of the 4alradio trucks had a wooden mast about 6 meters high from
which a single antenna wire extended into the individual trucks. Three
semi-undergro nd bunkers for vehicles w$re also observed in the
installatio nd along the eastern side a flat bunker which was surrounded
by a double arbed wire fence. This bunker was connected to the Token
and radio trucks by lines. Six additional wire lines extended from the
bunker into the quartering area of the airfield. These lines were suspended
from wooden masts about 3 meters high with simple cross bars. Two more
lines with porcelain insulators lead toward the Artillerie Kaserne.
A total of 40 to 50 x 200-liter barrels were stored close to the earth
bunker. The radar sets were not in operation on 8 March. However, on
24 January between 0930 and 1500, the Kniferest had continuously rotated
making one rotation within about 6 seconds. About 6 soldiers moved between
the radio trucks. An additional 15 soldiers wearing black-bordered blue
epaulets marched from the quarters at the field toward the radar station.4
Gardelegen radar station. Between 12 and 17 March 1955, the radar station 25X1
on triangulation point 63.2 northeast of Gardelegen was occupied by 1
Token, 1 Kniferest and 2 Fishnets, the latter 30 to 40 meters apart.
The Token-type set occasionally rotated during the morning and late
afternoon. The previously reported wire lines leading from the installation
toward Garddlegen and to triangulation point 47.7 west of the barracks
installation at the field consisted of 4 white wires each. The overhead
line extended south of #weitriangulation point 47.7 parallel to the highway
leading toward Klosterheuendorf. The line wax underground under the
railway underpass of the spur track leading to the barracks installation
at the field. An air force officer with several NCOs who presumably
belonged to the radar station were repeatedly observed in Gardelegen.5
6. Gotha radar station. On 5 December 1954, ^ Token-type set was
north of the Flak Kaserne west of Gotha. A Kniferest-type set 1Obout

were protected by wooden roofs. Insulated cables of various dianii
extended from the Token and radio trucks to two wooden masts where the
cables were tied up in a bundle and lead on to the Flak Kaserne.6
7. Plauen radar station. On 3 April 1955, 1 Token and 1 Kniferest were still 25X1
observed in the radar station near the water tower west of Plauen. A
second Kniferest-type set had repeatedly been set up and dismantled
in the installation prior to 3 April. Two small barracks were still
observed just next to the Token-type sets The soldiers who operated the
installation were black-bordered blue epaulets and probably had their
quarters in Kirchbaoh Kaserne since q"n going back

1-8. Wittenberg radar station. On 15 April 1955, the Token-type set
was still observed on Apollensberg west of Wittenberg,.It rotated
slowly between 0900 and 1200. Each rotation lasted 30 seconds. A
radio installation with a single mast 8 to 10 meters high and
with an egg-shaped masthead was observed850 to 100 meters from
the Token on the slope of Apollensberg.
9. Radar station on "Kleiner Entenfaengerberg" near Werder. On 19
January 1955, a radar set similar to a Token-type set, was still
observed on "Kleiner Entenfaengerberg" about 2 km east of Werder/Havel,
1 km south of the Potsdam-Werder railroad line. Observations were made
from a distance because the area around Entenfaengerberg was blocked and
the set could not be seen through the thick tree-tops at the foot of the
mountain. The radar set was apparently mounted on a fram

was possibly hidden behind the tree-tops. It was observed that the9set
only rotated in an anti-clockwise direction and in clear weather.
10. Demmin radar station. On 28 January and between 9 and,14 February 1955,
a radar station with a dDumbo-type set surrounded by a barbed wire fence
was observed at the eastern exit of Demmin south of the road to Jarmen,
about 600 meters east of the cemetery. There were also 2 masts
interconnected bat an antenna from which a lead-in extended to a radio
truck barked next to the Dumbo. A total of 3 radio trucks
were observed. Soldiers who were employed in
the installation wore black-bordered blue epaulets' and were quartered
in earth ~8nkers. The Dumbo occasionally rotate, aking 2 rotations in
1 minute.
11. Radar station near Neuhaus am Rennsteig. On 14 April 1955, a Soviet
installation;; probably a radar station, was observed at the southwestern
exit of Neuhaus am Rennsteig along the Steinheid-Neuhaus road. A 2.5-
meter-high board fence surrounded an area of about 275 x 50 meters where
a former villa and 2 ante systems, one about 10 meters high and the
other about 15 meters high, ere located. The bases of the masts were sunk
in angular irons about 15 m wide. The 10-meter antenna consisted of 3
double cross bars, each cross bar with 8 aluminum rods about 15 mm in
diameter. The 15-meter antenna had 2 such cross bars. Tvuo Soviets with
crimson epaulets and without weapons were seen in Neuhaus. One officer
wearing red-bordered yellow epaulets with red longitudinal stripes and
2 stars side-by-side left the villa.
about 60 Soviets with crimson epaulets were
quartered in the installation in addition to some Soviet families who
were billeted in the former villa. Three trucks allegedly belonged to
the radar station.
A similar radar station was alleudly located on Arnsgereuther Hill
between Neuhaus and Probstzella.
12. Air warning station near Rudolstadt. After 15 January 1955, a superstructure
4 to 5 meters high was erected on the platform of the so-called Luisenturm
on Hummelsberg, about 10 km north of Rudolstadt between the Kleiner amd
Grosser Kochberg. Work was terminated by late February. The superstructure
including the roof was built in the form of a half-timbered frame with
the spaces being filled with glass, thus providing a panoramic sight. On
25 February, some rods, probably rod antennas, were seen fitted to the

ion.
13. Stahnsdorf radio installation. On 28 March 1955, a radio installation
of 4 masts arranged in a square was observed about 200 meters south of
Ludendorff Kaserne in Stahnsdorf. The masts were about 6 meters high,
braced in 2 places about 8 meters apart. In the middle of the
installation a four-cornered wooden hut about 3 meters high was seen.
A similar radio installation was located about 30 meters north of the
first installation. Between the two installations was a guard tower
about 5 meters high which was permanently occupied by a sentry.
.On 12 April, the southern installation except for the wooden hut was
dismantled and a similar 4-mast station was established about 80 meters
south of the hut. A van-like truck was observed between the masts. No
cable lines were seen at this installation. The northern radio installation
was still unchanged. A third 4-mast radio installation with a wooden hut
was seen about 250 meters north of Siegfeld Kaserne on 12 April. No soldiers
o4ehicles were seen, but a sentry was posted there. Besides these
installations, many antennas or lines of unidentified installations were
seen in the area of Siegfeld Kaserne and Ludendorff Kaserne.
14. Radio installation at Fuerstenwalde airfield. On 22 March 1955, a new
radio installation was observed on the former Fuerstenwalde airfield. The
following installations were arranged from east to west;
two twin-mast installations about 50 meters apart; about 100 meters farther
west and unidentified set; and about 50 meters west of the latter
occupied by 5 Soviet officers, had been seen coming
direction of Rudolstadt and moving toward Luisenturm. A barracks
constructed next to the tower.

esh wire netting. The entire superstructure seemed to have
the shape of a box. About 101~rucks and 10 tl 15 radio trucks were parked in
front of the eastern hangar.
15. Radio installation at Johannisthal airfield. After 15 March 1955, two
4-mast radio installations were observed at Johannisthal airfield. One
installation was located in the middle of the field and the other at the
western edge of the former landing field. Soviet officers and soldiers
were repeatedly seen moving between th75former installation and the
depot of the former Organization Todt.
16. Radar set at Schoenwalde airfield. On 7 December 1954, the following
sets were located on the drill grounds of Schoentalde airfield:
1 RUS II on a propped-tulp trailer
1 generator on blocks, slightly dug in and surrounded by planks
1 radio truck with 2 vertical rods about 1 meter long on the roof.

The two rods were about 3.5 meters apart and interconnected by a
horizontal rod from which 4 hook-like bars branched off. A sketch was
made of this set.
1 similar set located at some distance and arranged in such a way that the
hook-like devices pointed to each other.
Cable connections laid on the ground and crossing the spur track on poles
were seen on all sets. Several soldiers moved between the sets. These
sets were no longer observed at about 1000 on 5 February 1955. On-the
roof of a building was & SCR-584 radar set which slowly rotated to and
fro. A.Pegmatit radar set which did not rotate was mounted on the same
building. Soldiers were seen drilling with. 8 xl$5-mm AA guns';, including
some in emplacements; on the training grounds.

19. `r warning co 'of KVP division in Eggenin-Kaxpin area* During March 1955,
an air warning oomPtIfty of about 80-meniss activated from volunteers of units
of the-KVP divisioh in the Eggesin-Karpin area. Training was done in the
quartering sectiox A in Parkin. Then the. unit was transferred to Gumnitz.
Four soldiers of this air warning company were always posted on an old
tower of reinforced concrete about 25 meters high and located about 100
meters east of tire Torgelow-Eggesin railroad line about 500 meters south
of Gumnitz. The tower had a direct telephone connection to the division
headquarters in $ggesin where all aircraft crossing this area were
reported. The up'per section of the tower housed a day room for the sentries.
Special' sets for detecting flying aircraft were not yet available.

slowly between 0900 and 1200. Each rotation lasted 30 seconds. A
radio installation with a single mast 8 to 10. meters high and
with an egg-shaped masthead was observed850 to 100 meters from
the Token on the slope of Apollensberg.
9. ?far eta on_onn"glain*r_ En_tenfae gerbepy near We er. On 19
January 1955, a radar not similar to a Token-type set, yeas still
observed on "Kleiner Entenfaengerberg" about 2 km cast of (erder/Havel,
1 km south of the Potsdam-Warder railroad line. Observations were made
from a distance because the area around :!;ntenfaengerberg was blocked and
the set could not be seen through the thick tree-tops at the foot of the
mountain. The radar set was apparently mounted on a frame in line with the
tree-tops. The upper grid frete had a slanting position and a resta le-shaped
box underneath which rotated together with the upper frame, This movement
was definitely observed. A second grid frame could not be identified. It
was possibly hidden behind the tree-tops. It was observe& that the9set
only rotated in an anti-clockwise direction and in clear weather.
10. Domain radar station. On 28 January and between 9 and 14 February 1955,
a radar station with a Dumbo-type set'surrounded by a barbed wire fence
was observed at the eastern exit of Dammin south of the road to Jarwen,
about 600 meters east of the cemetery. There were also 2 masts
interconnected by an antenna from which a lead-in extended to a radio
tr?nk -narked next to the Dumbo. A total of 3 radio trues
were cbserved. Soldiers who were employed in
the installation wore b ac -bordered blue epaulets and were quartered
in earth Vunkers. The Dumbo oacasiona~ly rotated making 2 rotations in
1. minute.
i1 Radar station near Neuhans_am Rennateig. On. 14 April 1955, a Soviet
installation, probably a rada:: station., was observed at the southwestern
exit of Neuhaus am Rennsteig along the Steinn.id-Neuhaus road. A 2.5-
meter-high board fence surrounded an area of about 275 x 50 meters where
a former villa and 2 ,antenna systoms, one about 10 meters high and the
other about 15 meters high, were located. The bases of the masts were sunk
in angular irons about 15 cm wide. The 10?-meter antenna consisted of 3
double cross bars, each cross bar with 8 aluminum rods about 15 an in
diameter. The 15-meter antenna had 2 such cross bars. Tara soviets with
crimson epaulets and without weapons weira seen in Neunaua. One officer
wearing red-bordered yellow epaulets with red longitudinal stripes and
2 stars side-by-side left the villa
uartered in the installation in addition to some Soviet families who
q
were billeted in the former villa. Three trucks allegedly belonged to
the radar station.
A similar radar station was a11e Idly located on Arnagereuther Hill
between Neuhaus and Probstsella.
12. Air warning station near Rudolatadt. After 15 January 1955, a superstructure
4 to 5 meters high was erectad on the platform of the so-called Luisentura
on 8ummelsberg, about 10 km north of Rudolstadt between the Kleiner amd
G.roaeer Kochberg. Work was terminated by late February. The superstructure
including the roof was built in the form of a half-timbered frame with
the spaces being filled with glass, thus providing a panoramic sight. On
25 February, some rods, probably rod antennas, ware seen fitted to the

The two rods were about 3.5 meters apart and interconne,3ted by a
horizontal rod from which 4 '.look-like bars branched off. A sk:stch was
made of this set.

Cable connections laid on the gronnnd and crossing the spur track on poles
were seen on all sees. Several-soldiers moved between the aet3. These
sets were no longer observed at a::out 1000 on 5 February 1955. On the
roof of a building was a SCR-534 radar set which slowly rotat-ad to and
fro. A Pegmatit radar set which did not rotate was mounted on the same
building. Soldiers wore seen c.rill'.ng with 8 x,25-mm AA guns, including
some in emplacements, on the I:rain!ng grounds
17. Radar set near Sehoenval lde -ijfield. On 8 .January 1955, a model AA 4 IBC
3 radar set, counted on a she: about 6 meters long, 4 meters wide and
4?5 meters high, was observed south of-Schoenualde airfield about 200 meterp
east of the Boetsow-Sohoenwal.e road. * could not be determined whether
a radio ,~ruok was parked in ':.iia shed.,
18. Radio installation north of Feissen. O 12 Marsh 1955, a ?our-mast radio
i.nstallat son was locatf%.. abcnt 500 meters went of the Yeissen-ORcrilla road
in line with the Bohni';cscb :arraeks inat~.llation? The masts were about 6
meters high and arran*.e!d in a square each side about 10 w4ters long. A
wuoaen hut was located in the middle of the square. Onl,4 Me Soviet sentry was

an air warning oom:^.xny of about 80 men vLs activated from volunteers of units
of the KVP divisio?.in the E gesin-Parpin area. Training was done in the
quartering sectior A in Parkin. Then the unit was transferred to Gumnits.
Four soldiers of his air warning company were always posted on an old
tower of reinforc.,d concrete about 25 meters high and located. about 100
meters east of tl?a Torgelow-Eggesin railroad '.ins about 500 meters south
of Gumnitz. The lower had a direct telephone connection to the division
headquarters in 'ggeein where all aircraft crossing this area were
reported. The u;?er section of the tower housed a day room for the sentries.
Special sets to-, detecting flying aircraft were not yet available.
1. omment, The Flak Kaserne in Wismar is occupied by 1 motorized rifle
regiment and I heavy gun battalion that are definitely not connected with
the mentions radio and radar installation which are presumably used for
air traffic ontrol and air warning service.

5. Comment. No changes occurred in`tl -
W Gardelegen radar station wher
compared with observations made in October 1954.
6. Comment. The Flak Kaserne in Gotha is occupied by elements of
the 57th Gds Not Rifle Div which is ::got connected with the radar
station. According to previous reports, Only 1 Token was seen in the
installation.
7,
9.
Comment. According to previous observation8, 1 Fishnet belonged to
Plauen radar station. This set was apparently not seen on the day of
observation.
Count. The Token on Apolleneberg near Wittenberg probably belongs
to the headquarters of the Southern Ftr Corps which is stationed in
Kittenbera.
LComment, Another radar station with 1 Token, 1 Kniferest and 1 Dumbo
was observed on triangulation point 62 about 1.35 km south-southeast of
Glindow in November 1954. The two radar stations probably belong to the
headquarters of the Twenty-Fourty Air Army in Warder.
~Comnent. The radar station near Demmin is reported for the first
time. It closes the gap between Puetnitz and Rechlin-Lears,
ommQnt. During June 1954, 1 Kniferest, 1 Fishnet ani presumably
1 n o were observed in Neuhaus am Rennsteig.. It cannot be determined
if tweae sets are identical with the sets mentioned in the present report.
For sketch of seta, possibly of type Kniferest, seen on 14 April 1955, see
Skertah 1.
12. I Comment. The air warning station near Rudolstadt is reported for the
first time. This indicates that an air warning organization is to be
established in the GDR.

gomment. The Schlieffen Kaserne in Stehnsdorf is occupied by the 66th
25X1
Sig Regt of the OSYG. The radio installations observed are possibly used
for the training of signal personnel,
Comment. The quarterin
g buildings of the former Puerstenwalde airfield
25X1
are occupied by elements of the 63rd IA Div. The installations observed
are probably used by AA personnel for training purposes.
Comment. The radio installations on .Johannisthal airfield are reported
or the first time.
Comonent. Elements of the 31st AAA Div arc quarteredjn Schoenwalde
airfield., The s4ta observed are fairly definitely used by these units for
training purposes. For sketch of new set, see Sleatoh 2,
Comment. The barracks installation in tteissen-Bohnitssoh is occupied
by tank and AA units of the Soviet Arsy. It is unknown whether the reported
radio installations belong to these units or if they operate as DP Installations
within the framework of the air traffic control system.
Comment. These are indications of the activation of air observation
units within the VP.
