PLACE ACQUIRED DATE ACQUIRED 29 June 1955 MM QC pOO RY M FOO RMA 1. Attempts to make trains, and particularly workmerttrains, run on time continue to be in vain. Neither appeals nor threats from Party officials, from the Government, and from the railroad management are doing any good, since the railroad employees are already performing their best in face of 25X1 most difficult conditions. 2. In Budapest in December 1954, at a time when the weather was still not bad, 60.4% of the workmer3trains and 50.2% of all the passenger trains arrived late. It must be taken into consideration that the workmenbtrains never come from farther than 100 km. and that their average run to Budapest 25X1 is only about 50 - 60 km. 3. The more important workmerj~trains run on the following lines: Esztergom - Budapest 49 km. Szob-Vgc - Budapest 72 km. Hatvan - Budapest 67 km. Szolnok-Cegled - Budapest 101 km. Lajosmizse- Budapest 73 km. Kunszentmiklas?- Budapest 61 km. Pusztaszabolcs - Budapest 62 km. Sz4kesfehervar - Budapest 67 km. Bicske - Budapest 49 km. 4. The causes of delay are: bad quality of the coal, faulty locomotives, numerous "go-slow" signals, slowness of the central traffic control and priority of Soviet military and transport trains, S-E-C-R-E-T NOFORN OOh AIR, JX I FBI I I AEC I I I I I (Note: Washington distribution indicated by "X"; Field distribution by "#".)
