1. The road which connects Asenovgrad and:Kurdzhali was completed two years agot
and runs through Tsurven (N 41-57, E 24-.57), 1`opolovo (N 41-54, E 25-00), and
Kumoniga (N 41-48, E 25-14). The road branches off from the kheskovo-
Kurdzhali road about 21.7 kilometers from Kurdzhalio From this crossing the
distance to Asenovgrad is about 64. kilometers. This makes Asenovgrad about
85.7 kilometers from Kurdzhali and 104 kilometers from Plovdiv.
2. The roadjwhich is in good conditionlis six meters wide and pebbled. There
are no tunnels on it. There is only one small concrete bridge on the road)
which passes very close to ravines. The road is surrounded by mountains,
especially the Topolovo-Pchelarovo (N 41-1+6 E 25-20" section which has
few inhabited places. The road is well planned with relatively light in-
clines. Among western countries this road would be considered a tourist
road because it offers magnificent views/ especially of the Rhodo1V Mountains.
It is almost certain that this road was built for strategic purposes in
order to link Plovdiv and Asenovgrad with Kurdzhali by a shorter route.
