SSR SUBJECT Regulations Governing Language Study of Soviet Officials Abroad DATE OF INFO. PLACE ACQUIRED DATE ACQUIRED 1. Soviet employees engaged in a heated discussion on 29 June 1955 over Soviet Ambassador request for clarification of the regulations governing his wife's foreign language study. such study was not forbidden by Moscow, could find nothing in the regulations to authorize it and hesitated to refer the question to Moscow for fear of placing the Ambassador's wife in a difficult position. They referred to an incident last year when some Soviets had taken language lessons, and there had been considerable difficulty after about six months. 2. The question was subsequently resolved by discovery of a lengthy paper on the subject, a copy of which she sent to the Ambassador's wife. Her summary of the ruling is that those Soviets who already have a basic knowledge of a foreign language may be permitted to study further. REPORT DATE DISTR. 8 August 1955 NO.
