The fifth section of the Bartolomejska Prison in Prague, which contains hundreds of cells, is reserved for political prisoners. Cells, which are furnished' only with mattresses, have one high, small window out of reach of the prisoners. 2. Discipline at the prison is extremely severe. There is no contact between the cells or with the outside world. Prisoners are blindfolded when taken to interrogations and to the weekly shower. 3. During the first week of imprisonment, prisoners undergo a medical examin- ation, which consists of a review of the inmate's medical history while he stands 10 feet from the doctor. Prisoners reporting sick are virtually ignored. Inmates of Bartolomeiska Prison 4. In early 1953 the following inmates of the Bartolomejska Prison were known: a. Andula Pokorna, e. Josefina (lnu), f. Sonia (lnu), P_antrac Prison 5. Conditions at the Pankrac Prison are superior to those at Bartolomejska. The cells, which have large windows, are equipped with wooden beds, chairs, and tables. Food, which is more abundant, is eaten at tables. Prisoners are permitted one visitor, a three-kilogram parcel, one letter and 50 crowns spending money monthly. Prisoners are permitted to communicate with one another during daily walks in the courtyard. 6. In each cell there is generally a gypsy, a common criminal. In some cases the other prisoners are obliged to teach them to read and write. Substituted lyrics for gypsy melodies are used as a means of communicating with other inmates. 7. The medical staff of the prison, which is composed of doctors who are prisoners, treat the inmates efficiently. Inmates of the Pankrac Prison 8.
