DATE ACQUIRED Naval. and Air Activity, Foochow and Shanghai 3 October 25X1 1. At 1900 hours six motorized Junks berthed near Mawei (N 25-59, E 119-27) and sc rge a tity of arms or ammunition. There were several antiaircraft guns on the hills near Mawei naval base. Troops occupied 12 tents located near the guns. 25X1 at Foochow, armed motor junks and harbor launches were camouflaged 25X1 DATE DISTR. NO. OF PAGES REQUIREMENT REFERENCES This is UNEVALUATED Information there were daily alerts at Foochow that lasted about 20 or 30 minutes each. Ships' crave at Foochow were required to return to their ships at 1900 hours daily; during alerts, crew members were required to remain in their cabins. Shanghai 5- bout 80 motor launches were in the vicinity of Buoy 21, Shanghai These launches had a speeil of about 20 knots and were armed with two machine guns forward and two aft. Two groups of 30 launches each 25X1 conducted training exercises in the mornings while the remaining twenty launches stayed at their moorings along the river. 25X1 6. the destroyer NAN CH'ANG (0589/2+90) and another destroyer or about i,uuu -cons were anchored at the Shanghai military district anchorage. The NAN CH'ANG was armed with two 14-inch guns, one fore and one aft and four antiaircraft guns. The motor launches may have been LCI's and LCT's. The speed and the number of the craft have probably been overestimated. 3. Previous sighting reports indicate that the PF NAN CH'ANG is 25X1 normally based at Shanghai.
