le The embargo on exports of optical and piezoelectrical quartz is causing
acute embarrassment in East Germany, Production of many Catl Zeiss
instruments which would otherwise be made in Jena is held up. On
occasions,the Carl Zeiss firm has been forced to tell customers that
they must supply their own quartz if the instruments to be manufactured
require quartz lens or prisms,
2. In an effort to overcome some of its troubles, Carl Zeiss has been
carrying out research in the adjacent'VEB Jenaer" Glaswerk Schott &
Genossen for the production of a synthetic quartz, Schott & Genosseri
has, now produced a synthetic which has been named Uviol glass, Uviol
is going to be-used by Zeiss in some of the. instruments and has already
made its appearance in some of the. barrier layer cells. Zeiss claims
that, the transmission properties of Uviol closely resemble those of
optical quartz, particularly in the infrared band, but that Uviol has
a better:transmission than quartz in the ultra violet band,
3. In regard to synthetic quartz crystals, Zeiss personnel believe it will
be many months before it will show any positive results, even though
Zeiss has equipped a new laboratory,
4. The supply situation in regard to piezoelectrical quartz is extremel
bad.
5. Senf, production manager of Carl Zeiss, Jena, in charge of fine mechanical
instruments, accompanied by Fromm of the Zeiss Export Department, was
recently to try to get a visa for himself and Fromm to go to
Brazil. Their reason for going to Brazil is to try to buy quartz and
find a suitable routing for it to East Germany.
