SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION FOR THE COMMITTEE

It is suggested that O/TR, in planning area training courses
experiment with the method outlined below and out it into general
use if it is found to be effective.
(1) Set up a lecture room with two screens side by side and two
35 mm slide projectors.
(2) One screen to be used for 35 mm color slides.(pictures) and
other for maps on 35 mm slides (color or monochrome).
(3) The lecturer standing between the screens could comment on a
picture and, while it is still in view, indicate on the map
the location of the place or feature in the picture and, if
pertinent, the region of which the photo area is representa--
tive.
(4) Special purpose maps could be projected on the screen to make
~.art:icular pictures or sequences more meaningfule.q. a pic
o?E a representative oasis in Arabia could be accompanied by a
yaaap showing the distribution of oasis agriculture in the Arabian

On 4 April 1957 the Chief, Plans and Policy Staff, Office of
Training stated;
?fhe Office of Training finds this idea interest Inq
and plans to experiment with it in future courses. This
idea would not result in savings to the Agency; on the
contrary, it would increase the costs of providing area
Instruction. OTR believes it can minimize costs and achieve
comparable results by having maps on slides and interspers-
i.na them at appropriate intervals during the showing of the
photograph slides. While the suggestion is welcome and commend-
able, we believe it does not merit a monetary award but rather
a couNnendati :n for proposing it."
On'26 November 1,957 the Office of Training detailed the results
its test as follows:

We have had a map of Western Europe made which is visible
in the darkened room, using the ?black light' process, and will
have other similar maps made on other areas as needed. This
technique was much mor inexpensive than the one proposed in
the subject suggestion, and was much more adaptable to.our
rather cramped area studies lecture room in I Building. Our
present screen takes up most of the front of the room, and the
'illuminated maps which we are using could be set at an angle
in one corner. It has proved highly effective and has been
well received by the students.

The suggestion for this map came from of our
staff, but we certainly would not wish to deny credit to the
author of suggestion No. 2922 for providing some of the inspir-
ation for idea."
The Deputy Director of Training made the following recomanen-
dation:
"Though the suggestion, as proposed, was not suitable
for adoption, it seems to have contributed to the development
of an alternative means of accomplishing the desired objective.
'therefore I consider that it is worth a small award and recom-
mend somethinci on the order of $15.00.
