1, Upon enterin,; the port of A+ovoroesi sky the customary routine '-search was rzade
whereby all cameras, binoculars and firearms were placed under lock and sealed.
The entire time the ship was in port the pangplanic was ;carded by two military
policemen.
2. Facilities for loading, and dischargin- cargo were in a i,cr;,- dilapidated state,
All equipment appeared to be ina very run-down condition. Only
one truck was available for use in transferring shipts earco from ship to
warehouse. A number of new trucks were seen in Novorossisk gin the pier area,
The new trucks observed closely resembled American trucks. One passenger v-
hicle appeared to be very much like the American "Veroury* automobile, it
could not be ascertained where the vehicles were manufactured or Pro.-a Yrt~.er?e
they were shipped. All rail equipment was very much deteriorated and there
seemed to be no effort made to maintain any of the available eg9iprnent in
working; condition. The harbor authorities possessed only one tuf-. for harbor
use and this was in extremely poor shape.
3, Construction work was observed on two piers. I con- 25X1
struction work began on a nevi pier which is to he exceptionally
large. One of thy- few standinL. buildings remaining in the pier area will nave
to be demolished in order to clear sufficient opace for the construction of
this new pier and warehouses, It was estimated by the Soviet port author-
ities that this project could not be accomplished in less than three years,

English merchant vessel, approximat'lyr 6,500 gro^;~ tons; one Canadian
Liberty merchant vessel, 8,000 gross tons, onorated by an unknown
Greek firm, (these four English vessels loaded whest and departed during
my stay in port); one small passenger vessel, named "Tdolotov". This
vessel was similar to the US "Eastern Linen type and was of approximately

6o The following naval vessels were observed: ten or more torpedo boats of
approximately sixty feet in length, which appeared to be of the iierreshof
type between sixty w-,d seventy feet in length. These boats maneuvered pres.-
tieally every night, leaving at approximately ten o'clock and returning; be
fore daylight. On Navy Day, two Soviet heavy :ruiners and 25X1
two Soviet destroyers entered port for the day. The harbor pilot stated
that one of the cruisers was named "Molotov", that both were built in the USSR,
and that the two destroyers were built in Rumania. The cruisers appeared to
be in top condition but the destroyers were in need of paint and outside
repairs,
