The usual sealing of wireless, Cameras and binoculars done in USSR ports was accomplish- ed by the port officials, 3 50X1-HUM 50X1 -HUM the airfield shown on the chart was hidden by high trees, there was a certain amount of activity, and not more than five twin engine planes going in and coming out of the field. These were all painted green and one was towing a target sleeve. The target plalie would make a circle from the field to the west then south and circle over hills north of the airfield, approxi- mately in the area on the chart where anti-aircraft guns fired at the sleeve target. The plane would then circle back to the airfield, The distance_was too great to see anything in detail with the naked eye, and not able to use binocu- lars. All the customs people and the harbor master were very pleasant and cordial. The usual rules were complied with, but radios were not sealed and their use was permitted. 50X1 -HUM the quay\ appeared to be about 2,000 feet long andconstructed of cement blocks with a heavy buffer beam of wood fastened to the. seaward face. The area south seemed to be a small naval base. A great deal of construction work was going on (area marked "D" on chart). A number of small patrol vessels were tied up herepand to the east along shore they seemed to be constructing some kind of a quay. This could not be determined with the naked eye. \ Saw about five small submarines entering and leaving at different times. Also at the point marked "E" on the chart a large capacity bucket dredge was dredging the harbor. It was loading into lighters which were being towed out to a dumping ground at quite a rapid rate. 14. At the oint market "H" three or four long barrelled guns in place on the hill, assume to be anti-aircraft guns, but they Were too far away to judge accurately. At the point marked "I" there was a semaphore station\ found the chart\ \ completely accurate as,to lights, depths and bearings. 50X1 -HUM 18. 19. There was much construction of various sorts going on in the vicinity, and in particular, the hills just behind the south end of the jetty were being levelled.
