CONFIDENTIAL/US OFFICIALS ONLY/Security Information - 2 - at Gdansk, Polish authorities maintained a 2 -hour uniformed and armed guard at the gangway, Who checked the passport of each person going ashore. Armed patrol boats, frequently observed operating in the area gave the impression that one patrol boat was assigned to each merchant ship in port. 50X1-HUN the east quay of Gorniczy Basin, which 50X1 -HUN appeared to be in good condition. Coal was loaded by traveling gantry type cranes capable of servicing the entire length of the three thousand foot quay. Vessels awaiting to be loaded were moored to the western quay of Gorniczy Basin. The harbor office, a large building, is located at the southern end of Gorniczy Basin. Because of the limited depth of water, approximately 30 feet, in the Basin, care- ful loading is essential to prevent a ship from grounding, and many ships Obtain only a partial cargo at Gdansk and top off at Gdynia. Seven days were necessary to load because the Polish laborers were constantly being moved from one ship to another. 50X1-HUM 50X1-HUM five or six seagoing mer-hant ship, including a three thousand tom Soviet ships were in the area to load coal. In addition several small coal carrying vessels were loading coal for shipment into the interior of Poland via,inlend water- ways. No ?Sovietor Polish naval vessels were observed. no new construction was observed in the area and commented on the apparent leek of effort to repair doused buildings. /observed no evidence that Gdansk was being established as a military supply area. 50X1-HUM ; 8.
