The autonomist groups supporting Nonni, has lost soma ground to the
pro-Cummunist~because PSI eras rebuffed by the DC and PSDI. The
autonomists also suffered because they want too far in making
concessions to the :right thereby alienating soma PSI adherents.

pendent of the PCI~ this group can and will be destroyed. The
Corcnunists will re-capture Italian Socialists

weakened the PCI hold, There is no on~ne in~he CGIL who
has DiVi~ario's prestige or his personal power. Tha Com-
mwnists will probably never again be so powerful in the
CGIL.
]novella's election to succeed him will hurt the YCI~ not help
it. A hard Comrnuni,st leader cannot conciliate-the Socialists.
He will only hasten their disengagement and coagulation as a
separate faction. His election suggests that the PCP s
strength in the ~ecutive Cotud.ttee is predominant. Some-
thing we always knew. But strength here does not mean strength
among the Socialists.
;Socialist strength can neutralize the Corrnnunists if the Socialists
unite and remain inside the GGIL. Anew split veould only
weaken the non-Communists.

Olivetti is a Utopian socialist. He is a dedicated Europeanist
and unshakeable de~~crat. He is spending his personal fortune
to encourage

to encourage development of a modern political movement in
Italy. He has brought great imagination and the resources
of the modern world to bear - sociologists engineers city
planners, adult education specialists.
Th~a Commumta ~dovement is his creature. He pays the bill. He
calls the tune, Ha has political aspirations. At present he
is mayor of Ivrea and is virtually boss of the Canavese Valley
near Turin. He has demonstrated that he can make a very suc-
cessful political machine which will have a vitality that
Lauro's "pasta politics" will never have. But he has only
lianitad resources.

UH' and other non-Communist groups on the left. Olivetti.

that he believes his group can provide. He is very sensitive

to t eke a seat or two in the chamber and~or one in the Senate
from Piedmont. He is an important part of the non-Communist
left.
In the long term 013.vett's influenc? in Italyi in Europe and. in
Eastern Europe could be very important. He is a shining
example of what p~i.vate b siness can do if it has a social
conscienc?. ~e ' ~~' "` the social potential of a
democratic regime. His example is bound to influence non-
Comaaunist students and leaders throughout Europe.
