r1FACTS ABOUT ETHIOPIA ?
tb. Congratulations on your- success in defending
the working class of the world and in distributing
your only daily USA Marxist newspaper to other
parts of the world.
We are Ethiopian students in Kiev, USSR stud-
ying on scholarships. We first became acquainted'
with your newspaper in the USSR and since then
have become regular readers of the Daily World..
In Ethiopia such newspapers are considered to be
dangerous to the existing feudo-imperialism.
The war in Vietnam is known and condemned
by all peace loving people. But hardly noticed by
the peoples of the world is a silent war going on
in Ethiopia where two worst systems of govern-
ment exist side by side: feudalism and imperial-,
ism (particularly U.S. imperialism).
Peasant uprisings are mercilessly bombed; sti:?
dent demonstrations are dispersed by machine
guns and the working class movement is silenced
by a cruel Ethio-U.S. (CIA) spying.
So, we as comrades in arms, sincerely ask you
to publish the facts about these conditions and
bring them to the attention of the world.

More Peace Corps resig-
nations followed the Im-
perial bodyguards' brutal
and bloody suppression of
the Ethiopian student do-
monstration at the univer-
sity campus. This time,
the resignations included
that of the director, Dr.
Murphy.
Dr. Murphy left Ethiopia
on Jan. 29. But a letter,
explaining his resignation,
is only now circulating to
the volunteers In the coun-
4try.
Dr. Murphy wrote that
"It has become difficult, if
not impossible, to continue
to represent the humane i
and idealistic impulse of
the American people
while the darker ' side of
our national character is
1 n c r easingly predomin-
ant."
As examples of the
darker side, the Peace
Corps director cited the
war in Vietnam and the
American operation of a
military base in northern
Ethiopia.
Explains Difficulty
Dr. Murphy then
stressed the difficulty of
working inside a repres-
sive system like that of
Ethiopia.
"The recent incidents at
the university and other
places throughout the em-
pire," Dr. Murphy said,
"have pretty well con-
vinced me that we do no.
service in teaching Ethio-
pian youngsters how to :
ask questions about their
physical and social world
when they live in a society
in which the answers to
those questions are bayo-
